i've been on here a few times and got some good feedback. i've about got my problem fixed. let me run back over it.
the last time i posted a thread i was talkin about getting the wrong pinion nut, applying WAY too much torque on it, gettin' it on most of the way and then not being able to get it off when the place called me to say they had given me the wrong nut.
well, i took it to a friends and got it off with an impact. i put the right one on (fairly snug, i wasn't using a torque wrench) and my buddy said i had it on way too tight. he had me loosen it almost a full turn 'till i had some play back and forth. he said it needed it for back lash. it felt too loose too me, but he's 'spose to know what he's talkin about. anyway when i rode off it was making a whirring noise from the rear end. the more a accelerate the worse it is. it goes with the speed of the vehicle. it doesn't leak gear oil anymore though.
my question is: is it possible that not having that nut tight enough would acount for that noise? i'm scared to really get it going fast because i'm worried i might burn something up. is it a bigger possibility that i tore somethin' up in the rear end when i was torquin' the hell out of that other nut. or maybe i even put the driveshaft back on wrong some kinda way. i really don't see how thats possible though.
well maybe some of yall can help. thanks in advance.
Preload has nothing to do with the torque on the nut. Preload is set within the gear set and the pinion nut must be torqued to spec. The driveline, u-joints and just plain slop are all slack too but is it preload? No, it's not. Torque up that nut to the proper specs, your noise should be less or else your problem lies elsewhere. You didn't specify which rear end you've got but if it has a "crush" sleave, the the nut torque is critical. My '86 F150 4X4 makes noise too but it's more the tires than the dif's. Is it a posi & you did you add any additive?

i tried to go to a buddy's house today to see if he had a torque wrench. its the fourth and he wasn't there so i'll try tommorrow. this is how i spend my fourth (worrying about this damn truck). any case i'd still like to hear some more opinions from ya'll. thanks alot.
