I want to replace my front wheel bearings in my '86 4x4. I know once you take the manual hub off there is a special socket that is needed. When I was at Napa they had a dozen that looked the same and nobody could tell me which was right for me. The one said it worked in '86 and up with the dana axle, which sounds right, but it seemed odd that it didn't say '80 and up, I figured they would all be the same. Can anyone tell me what I need for sure? Thanks!
If it has the dana 44 then I think it's the 4 slot spindle nut. Mine had a six slot but it was a dana 50. When I went in to buy the socket they also said 86 and up, but mines a 85 f250, but it was the one I needed
I believe this same socket fits the 70's 1/2 ton trucks, and it also fits the f250's with the dana 44HD TTB axle(like mine). Like was said, the other socket is for the dana 50/60 frontends on extended cab f250s and all f350's. What is confusing are the sockets made for the larger rear axles. The full floating rear axles also use a socket that looks the same, but is different.
