Hi im new to this site, im trying to find out a little about my 4x4, i was given this truck in Erie Pa. by a relative, he told me its a 1978 F-250 "snow commander"?? he said it came factory with a plow on it, and being this "snow commander" it is supposedly all 1 ton suspension, anyone know anything about these trucks or where i might find some info on it?? it has a 351m-400 auto, i believe a 205 TC, and 3:54 gears in front, and auto lock hubs, no plow but still has the instructions for it on the dash, any help is appreciated, thanx......
The truck was GIVEN to you? Good score! How is the body? Is it rusty? Just wondering. You'll find that the "Snow Commander" is somewhat of a rarity being an F-250 with factory 1-ton running gear. You should have a Dana 60 up front and one out back. Good stuff.
Do a seach for "snow commander". You should be able to pull up some more info. You came to the right site.
Welcome, nice to see someone else from Erie. The snow commander is a factory package. You are right in that it has the 1 ton suspension under the 3/4 badge. Dana 60's front and rear.
I own a 79 F250 with the same package. I was told it was called snofighter. I got my build sheet from Ford today and it said it came with the snow package but it said nothing about a plow.My truck has dual 60's, dual sway bars and extra springs front and rear with helpers.

Wow, thanx for all the replies, at least someone else has heard about this truck, anybody else I ask gives me a stupid look, not much snow here in Oklahoma, lots of red mud though,lol.....by the way Mudder the body is in real rough shape years of Pa's road salt did its toll... lots off rust. Im thinking of finding an X-cab with the bench seat and either a short bed or custom flat bed for my dirt bike and tool boxs, first comes fixing the T-case, it is slipping a chain or something, it was drivin for 8 years in 4Wheel cause the previous owner that it was all time 4x4, any tips???well thanx again......Drive Hard....
Hey fellow ford owners. Ive had a 78 f-250 for years. 400,np435,np205,dana 60s front & rear with 4.10 ratios. Has springs like you guys are mentioning. How do i check for the "snow commander" option? I dogged this old dude for years pushing snow & now want to rebuild her. It is an xlt, high output heater & west coast mirrors say ford on them,& the dual sway controls front & rear.
i just went through all my old posts and found this one, its the first one i did on FTE(how special).....anyways figured i might as well update it, i have learned since then that "snow fighter" is the correct name, thanx all, and have really found out what this truck is capable of, i removed the bed, added 35" tires and a 500cfm holley 2bbl street avenger, the suspension will shake your teeth loose but is hard to break.......ive had this truck in some deep holes and it climbs right back out, i havent got stuck yet, but i use some common sense when wheeling cause i dont have a winch yet........i put some pics of it in my gallery the other day, keep in mind i drove this truck daily for a couple years, and at the same time was beating the crap out of it on the trails.......its a bit rugged, but is now undergoing a frame up restoration....the pics in my gallery are my "before" pics, so they arent pretty....but in my eyes its beautiful because i got it for free and didnt have to do much to drive it for years.............
