I actually thought I did, since it flashed the message as I pulled out of my driveway a couple of days ago and then I went on a 45 minute city drive. But apparently it might not have completed. Since I got the message yesterday again. Unfortunately, the display doesn't flash - REGEN COMPLETED...

So one doesn't know if it completed and my city driving causes it to go back into regen quickly or not. And usually I can watch the fuel mileage and tell, but these city drives lately are killing me. No long enough runs without having to change speeds and since I am not feeling well, watching the fuel mileage while driving makes me even more sick to my stomach than I already am.

Going back and forth to the hospital for tests and treatments, so I don't really have the energy or time right now to figure it out unless I absolutely have to. Times I need to go are during our "rush hours". I just drive it and let the truck do what it needs to do. If I get the drive to clean message, then I guess I'll have to do that. I think it is because I am stopping and starting I am generating a lot of soot and since I never really get going, I am not generating enough heat for any type of passive regen.

I have to get to the dealer somehow to look at the transmission and get the TSBs done for the P to R/D delay and the 2 to 3 shift flare. I'll ask them to look at the emissions systems too. Since those are all under warranty. My B2B 3yr /36k is over because of time.

In your case it probably did complete but the city driving is the killer. Might want to shorten your oil change intervals a bit to keep the fuel dilution down.

Thanks for the advice senix.

FWIW, I already have shortened oil change intervals and use fully synthetic oil, Shell T-6. Going to try valvoline next and switch to Almagated additive. In fact, I just did the backyard mechanic test for fuel oil dillution and I am good to go. (No smell and no separation when I put a drop of oil on a paper towel) The oil still feels nice and slick too - although I only have about 2,000 miles since my last oil change. I plan on changing it in the next couple of months anyways. Currently I only put about 300 miles a month on the truck.

After I get "healthy" or at least stabilized I am planning on a moving to AK - and it will get the oil changed before I leave. I don't want to have to change mid-trip and it is a 5,200 mile drive. I know I will change it again, once I get there. I am not planning on ferrying over, but driving the Alcan the whole way since the Ferry cost is high, especially if you are pulling a trailer. (I've done the entire drive before - only that time was round trip)

How do you tell when a regen is complete?

Thanks for the well wishes...

If you have an aftermarket monitor it will tell you.

Otherwise, I can sometimes tell by looking a the MPG gauge. It will drop when you are going a steady speed and then when it is done will go back up. It is the only way I can tell without an aftermarket meter. Unfortunately, you need to be able to go that set speed so bumper to bumper traffic tends to mess that up.

OK, guys, thanks. As luck would have it i went into regen yesterday. Saw the message. I started looking for a way to tell when it was done, found nada. So, i just went home. I sure wish Ford would stop thinking I'm stupid and give me the information I need to keep the truck working as well as it can. When we started In 08 we got the message and it stayed on until cleaning was complete. Then in 09 or 10 it went to a three second notice and you had to go to the message center to see when it was over. Now all I get is a 3 second message, ugh.

So I guess I need an after market device to keep me informed. The insight? Is that the preffered device. That's an edge product, right? Does Ford approve or do we know. I'm assuming since Edge probably doesn't want to pay another fine the insight just reads data.

Fuel additive, I'm still using diesel kleen. Since no one mentioned it I guess the 6.7L does better with something else, what is it?

Oil change. I haven't gotten up the nerve to look at my oil yet. I know when I see it i will want to delete and tune this truck. I really am gonna try to stay stock. I really am, but seeing that watery coal black thin oil/diesel mixture will make me feel sorry for the engine.

My first OA was <.5 for fuel dilution. Oil does not turn as black so quick now.

That's good to hear. I think the truck reflects a considerable improvement in technology since the 08s came out. But there is still some lag. I tried hitting a tight gap from a stop the other day and it kind of delayed on me but once it kicked in the acceleration was great.

Edge still makes programmers, but the insight just reads data.

Some people had tried almagated and say it works great for extending regens. I don't know yet - but I plan on ordering some and trying it out.

Almagated, I've never heard of that one. Where do they sell it?

This is the big point I like. The active/passive regen system is so much more refined that we don't really know when it is going on. I love the fact that it is now a process that we can just completely ignore.

I'm sure the curiosity is driving you nuts, but really, it's not something we need to waste energy on.

My truck will do a clean out and I usually think that it's just time for it to do it and then I forget about it.
I have a 2012 bought new in July 12. The only thing I ever see is a message that says the exhaust filter is being cleaned. I do not track the time between the event as I assume it does it as required. I assume this is a passive regen? I never see anything about exhaust particles, etc. I have not had type of re-flash done and avoid the dealer at all cost. I change my oil at 5K like I have always done on all other Powerstrokes since the late 90s. I use AMSOIL diesel clean and AMSOIL Cetain boost with every tank. All this said, I guess I am still trying to understand all this regen discussion. Should I be doing something that I am not doing at this time? Truck runs great, gets good milage for what its intended use is (16.5 mpg in town, 19 on the road). I pull a bass boat and a 40 ft RV with no issues. Please advise guys. Thanks in advance.

Don't change a thing. If it works well then leave it alone. Unless you have a monitor to externally check the regen status then you will not know the soot count.

Cleaning exhaust filter message is the same as what we are referring to as regen.
