Just echoing what others have had to say; I hope you stick around with your knowledge of the Ecoboost and F150 towing capabilities. You've been a great resource for the site!
I think you'll be well served by any of the small cars from the big auto makers. My parents have bought two Chevy Cruzes (I think both are the 1.8L, MY 2011 & 2013) and a 2012 Focus with the 1.6L and they're all good for upper 30s to lower 40s on longer highway trips and achieve mid 30s with short trips, winter driving, and general commuting combined. I wasn't in a place where I could keep a 4th vehicle (currently have my '13 FX4, '95 F250, and wife's Chrysler 200), but I sometimes kick myself for trading in my '03 Focus for the FX4. It wasn't great compared to modern cars (pretty consistent 30 mpg), but I drove it for just short of 70,000 miles with little more than fuel and oil changes as input costs.
Sorry about your truck. Look into a Ford Escort. I bought one for my mother. She gets 29-30 mpg running short trips to the beauty shop and grocery store. If I take it on the highway at 60mph it will reach 40 mpg in just a few miles. I haven't tried it at 70mph yet but it's a great car
Nooooooooo Tom!! Not you, Mr. Ecoboost hero to me!
Heheheheeee, really, like the others have said, you're doing what's right! Putting ye family first! That's the ticket! When ye get my age, ye'll look back and be very thankful for what ye're doing now. We paid a dear price for me CFO to finish her doctorate, and it was right choice. I'm proud of y'all! And ye little ones! They'll be graduating from college in about two weeks! It'll seem that way, I tell ye!
Hang in there man. We're with ye! Mr. Ecoboost Tom!
It hit me when I went out to grab my insurance card how I really don't wanna do this. Oh well, there will be another.
Pretty much true with everything at some point, I say "Don't sweat the small S*#t". You'll be better off in the long run, won't be too long you'll be posting how much better (or worse) the (your) new, next generation F150 is from the last series.
Yup. It's a certified used 2013 with 20,000 miles on it.

Just remember, you've got your priorities straight and you're not letting your emotions drive you decision.
If I were in the same boat, I'd trade/sell my FX4 (or my wife's Chrysler 200. Now, the same doesn't hold true for my '95; she's worth too much to me in sentimental value.) since they are replaceable items; when times are better, a replacement will find its way into your hands again.
Thanks guys! It's done, signed all the paperwork an hour ago. Took the truck home to clean it out, remove my StableLoads, and tow the trailer in next week. They are taking the trailer in trade with the truck to cover the negative equity. Found out that I owed $35,300 on it, and with the KBB average trade-in value of $28K I feel they gave me a great deal.

Nah, that was the F150. I used to cruise back and forth to work at 65 MPH because of the MPG penalty when going faster. NOT anymore.
