I have a 89 f150 with the 300 inline six with a four speed. The problem being that around 45mph. in a laboring situation the motor acts like it has a dead short. It cuts out alot and more so if there is moisture involved. I have had different shops hook analizers on and never completely fix the problem. I have put all the basic eletrical in as well as injectors ,main fuel pump, fuel filters, intake gasket.egr valve. I was told by a parts man that ford had a recall on the older pickups with a wiring harness connection that would possibly be a issue here. any ideas or experience would be appreciated. THANKS
Hey th1 thanks for thinking about my troubles. I fixed it but unfortunately I dought you have the same problem. It was my distributer. that hard to reach 1/2 bolt that holds it in place had come loose. I reset the timing by ear and tightened it.
She flies now.
Thanks again and Have a great 4th of July, I've had mine.
being Canadian and all. Best of luck buddy.
Have an 88 4.9 (300) six. I had the same problem with motor cutting out for very short moments when loaded. It was also a loose distributer lockdown bolt. Yes I set the timing by ear method because using a timing light on this motor gives poor results.
I think the momentary cut-out when loaded happens as the timing advance changes under load. Interestingly, this van always started, and did not detonate even with a freewheeling distributer. The ignition wires must have held the distributer roughly in a range where it would run. Power and fuel economy is better now.
my 90 f150 300 6 would cut out and miss acted all stoopid, had to replace the harness that goes through the firewall, not the big one, but there is another one close to the drivers side fender, not sure what they had to do, but there was something right there where it goes through the firewall they had to replace. ran ok after that, sorry i cant remember the name of the part. and my digital cam is broke or id get a picture for ya
