Tailgate torsion bar failure ?

All of a sudden the tailgate feels like it weighs triple of what it used to.

I've got the inside cover off, but I am not seeing a failure.

Anyone already been through this?

Mine was broken inside the rubber sleeve right where the bend is, could not see it until I pulled it out. Also the bracket may have rusted through.

The torsion bar has failed. It is very possible that the bracket inside the tailgate is broken. That is normally where it breaks. From the sounds of it you got lucky, normally when these break it's when the window is down and the tailgate is down, thus the torsion bar slams into the glass and makes it explode. Some people live with the weight and remove the bar such as me, others fix the problem and keep the bar in. It's your choice. If you cannot see inside where the bracket is, you can always unbolt it from the body instead and move the bar around. If it moves a lot, it broke inside. If it's still pretty firm, there may be an issue elsewhere.

Here is kind of a rough image of where it should mount on the body

Mine is a 78 so it's a little different looking, however, it should be in the same area. It's worth looking. Just be careful about your glass.
