Hi I have a 2000 f250 with auto/manual locking hubs and today the 4x4 quit working. The light comes on the dash and the drive shaft and u joints turn but the front wheels dont turn even when its locked in. I assume its the hubs? And when im going down the highway about 75 the front starts making a hellacious noise but stops if I slow down is this connected? Any help is greatly appreciated thanks
my Excursion does the same thing (except the vibration). I have to get out and manually lock the hubs.
to manually lock them, turn the handle clockwise from Auto to Lock
This.
Its common for the hubs to stop auto locking if you have a vacuum leak or if they need to be serviced.
To check for a vacuum leak simply turn on 4x4. A leak will cause the HVAC to change to defrost. To service the hubs watch my video on the simple procedure.
I have kept my hubs manually locked all winter. We had some good weather last week so I unlocked them then there was a new storm and forgot to put them back. Tried the auto vacuum method and nogo with light on the dash. On a 2011!
It's still under warranty so I'll get it checked but my feeling is that I'll just spend all winters with hubs locked; cheaper to use a bit more gas than going to the dealer to get them serviced.
take a hammer and give the shift solenoid on the back of the t-case a few "love taps". the solenoids have been known to freeze up over the years. love taps will free them up usually
alternatively, you should service the hubs per the video above. even then, that is a mechanical interlock that will lock the hubs.
I believe you are not actually having your t-case engage even though the 4x4 light is lit up.
if the front hubs are locked in (pretty hard to defeat that manual lock), then the front driveshaft will turn due to the hubs.
if you have the jackstands, the best way to test this is to get the truck off the ground 100% and do a test of the 4x4. you can even use wood blocks to support the axles
but yes, I'm inclined to think the issue is your t-case itself. those hubs are pretty reliable once they are put in the manual lock position. almost foolproof.
are they supposed to auto lock...even if they are in manual unlock?
Yes they are and that was my other question I have to get new hubs and I want mile marker my buddy has them and theyre good but when I looked them up it says I need a conversation kit. Is this necisarry even tho mine were manual and auto they says they are 30 spline for dana 50 axles this is exactly what I have im so confused lol
