Howdy Ranger Folks

Here is an e-mail I recived this morning from my cousin in BC. It seems her boyfriend is having a little Ranger trouble.

Now they didnt give me a year or any engine info. I'm hoping one of you Ranger experts might be able to figure this out by just looking at the pic

Thanks in advance

(e-mail)
Hi Rick

I've got a question for you since you are our resident Ford expert. Gordie started his car today and heard a loud backfire and then the car started making a bunch of hissing noise. He checked under the hood and it looks like some hoses are missing. He can't explain it but the truck is running really poorly. I've attached a couple of photos to see if you happen to know what this is all about. Any advice would be appreciated. He's in a pinch because he has to use the truck for work tomorrow. Lordco is open late but without know how as to what it is that's missing, we're hooped. HELPPPPPPP!!!!

You are looking at a 4.0L 90-94 vintage. The vacuum tree looks to have two lines disconnected where the nipples are shined up and the lines are there, but off the nipple. Reconnect the two lines that are loose. In the picture, they are the two right behind the big brake booster vacuum line. The lines look like they would go to the speed control and climate control blend doors or possibly to the air cleaner.
The symptom describe an engine with a vacuum leak. The picture confirms you have a leak. A back fire will sometimes blow off loose fittings around the intake manifold.

Thanks from BC!
There were two blanks on the vacuum tree that went no where. There were no signs of any disconnected hoses that I could find under the hood. I installed two "nipples" to cover up the two shiny the empty branches. It seems to be running well but it is still a bit of a mystery as to their purpose.

The vehicle is a 1992 Ford Ranger with a 4.0L engine, 4X4 XLT with 5 speed standard transmission.

Questions:
Replaced the clutch 5 times on this vehicle and it is really hard to shift gears into any gear. What's the deal with that. I'm no clutch pig and I do know how to drive a standard. Any suggestions on something to investigate??? It used to leak through the frost plugs - problem fixed.

Automatic shift on the fly 4 wheel drive does not work. The switch in the cab is working. It's been suggested to me to replace it with Manual hubs. What are your thoughts?

AC is pouched! I would have to change to the new refridgerant but I don't know costs or where to buy the retro fit kit and AC pump. Any ideas???

Thanks for any info you can provide.

Hello, Welcome to FTE!

Try posting your questions in sep posts. You might want to check in the HVAC forum also. We also have a transmission forum. Check with Nutter on how to do this. He will get you all messed up -hehe
