When did computers take over?

I just picked up my new (hey! it's new to me) Bronco a few hours ago. The first thing I noticed is that once it gets up to temp, it has an idle surge. I also stalled on me when I was rolling up to a stop light. Before I go tearing into it I'd like to pull the codes, assuming it has an ODB computer.

It's an '86 300 - does anyone know if that motor has a way of pulling codes?

Yep, even though it's a feedback carb, you still can pull the codes from it. It's done exactly the way it is with EFI. The connector is on the passenger side near the battery.

When did computers take over?

This thread tells how to pull codes from an EEC-IV (Electronic Engine Control generation 4) computer like your '86 has. OBD-II (On-Board Diagnostics generation 2) didn't come out until '96 in F-series.

You can get inexpensive code readers at Walmart, the same as sold at parts stores onlt half the price. Check it out

They only mimic the engine light. There's nothing inside them but an expensive connector, a switch, and a light. It's an empty black box.
