That would have been cool! The sound of that 289 was wonderful. But that 440 made good music as well.
Legend has it that the Stang used for filming was McQueen's personal one and that every part was Magnafluxed since he drove it - they didn't want to take undue chances with their star. I doubt they took that precaution earlier when he jumped the fence in The Great Escape.

I didn't know that, but it sounds fair as he was a bandit for doing as much stunt / driving work as he could. Must have been a producers and insurers nightmare.
First, on topic, I do think you are right that you cut it to size and the apply it.
As for McQueen, I toyed with buying the book McQueen's Machines at the book store a couple of days ago. Now I wish I had. Yes, he was a rogue and did what he wanted to do. He was into motorcycles in a big way and even wrote for at least one of the mags under a pseudonym. I picked up one once and was reading it, only to realize that the pictures showed that he was the author. Wish I'd have kept the magazine.
I was reading up on that chase. They let McQueen due about half of it. If you can see him in the rear view mirror, he's driving. If the mirror is turned down then it is the stunt driver.
Anyway, back on topic of my McQueen interior, I found a seat set for the front that I want. It's on discountvantruck.com. They call it the "American". It looks like old school mustang seats with a center console. I want to go with black as the main color and medium gray as the secondary color. I was thinking of painting the door insets, cluster bezel, radio bezel, and the inset on the main dash above the glove box a matching gray from SEM. How does that sound?
