I have been seeing problems concerning “Oil Leaks” that looks like it’s coming from the rear main seal or you can’t tell where the oil is coming from. I have a ’88 F-150, 4.9L that had the same problem. (Oil on the pan, manual tranny, bottom of frame and every where else. It appeared to be coming from between the bell housing and the oil pan. Oil all over the starter. It turned out to be coming from the oil pan gasket right rear corner. Some how the gasket was protruding out on that corner. FIX: Loosen the bolts on that side of the pan and pushed the gasket in ¼” and re torque the bolts. Added a can of CD2 stop leak….Problem solved. Still haven’t figured out the low oil pressure reading though.

I have seen a number of oil pan gasket failures on the 5.0 engines. My truck started at 30k miles. Had the dealer replace the gasket because i did not have the time. The gasket was hanging out the sides of the oil pan. Sent a letter to NHTSB, because a fire could start with the oil getting on the exhust, and converters. No luck, I had to pay about $600 to fix it.
