My '95 E-350 powerstroke has a mysterious problem.
It shows kilometers not miles, just for information.
I write down the mileage every time i refuel, just to keep track of the average consumption, and it will show me if something is about to happen, like the injectors being worn out.
So, I refueled at 399284 km. and looking forward to seeing it pass 400000 km. in the near future.
Then, on the highway i glanced down and it shows 399999, just in time I thought. Next thing that happened was it changed to 300000
Now I have 301058 km. and counting.
What is going on, this is a digital counter, not a mechanical one that can get stuck?
Not a "problem"; a "feature". Next time you start the truck, when you first turn the key to RUN and ALL the little LCD segments on the odometer light up briefly, look VERY closely at the leftmost digit. It looks like:
Code:
_
_|
|_|
No upper left segment, used to display a 4, 5, 6, 8 or 9. So after 399,999, it rolls back to 300,000. Every time. Ford probably saved about 11 cents (CDN) on each vehicle to do this. What's never been answered is - if you plug a scanner or AE or the like into the OBD-II port, and get the milea... er... kilometerage, does it show the ACTUAL number?
I will try my cheap crap scanner and see what it reads, if it reads the mileage.
It doesn't read anything else than fault codes on engine and rpm. All other readings are blank.
Will this one read my truck and ABS system : Actron OBD II CAN ABS Scan Tool CP9580A Autoscanner Plus
Or what's the right name and number of this "AE" you're talking about.

Probably not. Most generic OBD-II scanners do NOT communicate with our trucks
Or what's the right name and number of this "AE" you're talking about.
AutoEnginuity. It's a program you install on a laptop or other Windows device. It does read mileage, but the real question is whether the mileage stored in the PCM keeps counting up over 400,000, or whether it reverts to 300,000 in the PCM.
How long was your truck here in the States? If it ever saw a dealership for service, chances are it was flashed for the Ford Enhanced sorta-OBD-II, so you should be good with AE.
It was delivered directly to a Dealership in Norway.
It was sold and registered with Norwegian plates on 12th january 1996.
Regular dealership service until 2004. After that I don't know, as there are no more entries in the service booklet.
I had it serviced at the dealership last year, and they checked it with their diagnostic computer. Due to problems with engine shaking/stuttering between 70-80 km/h when increasing speed. All they found then was a slight voltage drop in the injection system when this happens.
Still have that shake/stutter, even worse when engine is cold. (I forgot to take out the BD X-powerchip at service). Tried it without the chip and it's the same problem, but dang it's a slow running truck.
It says OBDII on the cover of the connector under the dash.
If I don't get any connection with AE, maybe I can call my dealer and ask if they can re-flash it.
It connects, it reads codes, finds nothing though, and that's it.
No sensors to read, no tests to perform, no information at all.
Do you all think I need to have it reflashed? To get more information availlable or to get access to tests like the KOEO, KOER, buzz test, cylinder contribution, etc.
^^ That will work. "Flashing a PCM" is basically just updating the software in it. The old programming is erased and updated with the latest and greatest programming. That's all there really is to it, but installing a PCM with the newer programming on it will accomplish the same thing.
