Thank you.
Already? . Did you buy the truck new? Do you know if that area was previously repaired? Post a pic if you can.
was this caused by rock chips that went unrepaired? If so Ford won't honor the corrosion warranty. Like Snowseeker said the corrosion warranty only cover complete rust through and I believe it has to be within 5yrs or 100k.
After my trucks first winter I have a nice coating of surface rust on all the un-painted parts. I plan
on cleaning it as best I can and coating everything with fluid film to try to fight the rust.

I don't think so.It is about 1"x3" area where paint is pealing because of rust underneath.
My 99 F250 didn't have this much rust when I sold it in 2012.

The funny part about that is ford has it figured out that even if the sheet metal wasn't painted at all it would still take 5-6 years to rot threw, coincidentally just outside of their "warranty period".
Instead of investing the time and money to prevent the problem and increase the quality of their product they invest the money into the research of "How long can we warranty this thing without actually paying for anything under warranty?" The next department is paid to make the part as cheap as possible to hold up good enough for that short period.
I would get it fixed like previously stated since it's so new. What part of the country are you from? If its anywhere in the rust belt get it fixed then coat the backside while its still fresh. I fixed my bed after it rotted through twice (first time was a bad repair). Personally pull the bed and POR, topcoat, fluid film the whole underside to make her last a long time. It's a few hundred bucks upfront and a decent amount of time but it saves a hell of a lot more time (can be a month+ if its bad) and money (thousands) later on when it gets bad.
