Hey guys my dad got a new 2014 f150 the other day so he gave me his 2009 f150 5.4 lariat 6 1/2 bed 4 door. Anyway I want to convert it to 4x4. Is this possible or would it be better to just trade it for something that already has 4x4? Thanks in advance (has airaid cold air intake on it)
For an '09, depending on mileage and how popular 2wd is in your area (how well a dealer thinks it will sell), your best bet might be to trade in. Otherwise, a 4wd conversion is possible, but I don't know the specifics. In the 90's era trucks, it's usually recommended to have a full donor truck to get all the parts you need, and I'm not sure how the electronically controlled drivetrain changes things.
I think you'd be money ahead just to trade the vehicle. Modern vehicles have soo much more to consider than the old school vehicles, more than just a "mechanical swap" of componenets. By the time you are thru, I think it would be cheaper and alot less headache to trade it on a purpose built 4X4. Not to mention issues that will arise later. That being said, I can't speak from experience as I have never attempted this on a old or new truck, and I don't know anyone who has done it on a newer vehicle.
Good Luck either way.
Here's another point to consider:
If you have a $200,000 home you're going to sell, and you've put a $50,0000 swimming pool on the property,
it's still a $200,000 home, and the pool can just complicate the sale.
Likewise, if you have a $10,000 car, and you put a $3000 stereo system in it,
it's still a $10,000 car, and a lot of buyers don't want a vehicle that's had the factory wiring cut, spliced, ect.
If your truck is worth, say $15,000 and you spend $4000 on this 4x4 mod, then decide to sell it, would you think it's now worth $19,000?
Personally, I don't think you'd even get the $15,000 for it as most people wouldn't
consider
a "Frankenstein" truck. You'd have to drop the price way down to sell it.
RigTrash has the correct answer; trade it in, unless you're a "big DIY project" kind of guy.
Semper Fi to ya Rig…..
