My son who is an IT guy suggested going here: What is Windows Defender Offline?
Burn the file to a flash drive or CD and boot to the drive. It will detect a rootkit virus, which antivirus programs used while the OS is running cannot.
I am having pretty much the same thing going on. I got everything back
with system restore except the book marks. I didn't know Fire Fox had
it's own restore points. Thanks for that.
My only problem with using this product is that I have kids so no blank
media. Trying to borrow a cd from next door. And the other computer they ask u to use is in the freight office in town 50 miles away.
So Ross how important is it to use the other computer to do the download?

You don't need to use a different computer, you need to boot the suspect computer off the CD (usually something like hitting F1 during boot, then change boot options to boot off CD or flash drive, whatever you're using).
I'm not sure that program will remove a rootkit virus, but it will tell you if you have one. Kaspersky has a free rootkit cleaner IIRC.
Sorry to hear that AX. About 10 years ago I had the final straw with Microsoft problems like that and I went out and bought a Mac. It has been great. Now my whole family uses them including my 93 year old Mother. Sorry that I can't help you recover what you have but I can recommend a change. If you can run Windows you will have no problem changing over to the Mac OS X.

This is what it said to make me think that Ross.
. Note
We recommend that you download Windows Defender Offline and create the CD, DVD, or USB flash drive on a PC that isn't infected with malware—the malware can interfere with the media creation.
Go to the Display your Bookmarks pulldown, select Show all Bookmarks, Import and Back-up, Restore, and see if it shows you 10 bookmark backups to choose from. If so, choose a date and see if it brings them back.
I found what your talking about Joe. It's there just like ya said.
Damn good to know for the next time. We get power surges and outages
very regular here. I have a great and spendy power supply thing
that has saved this new Win 7 system several times now.

Just my 2 cents based upon hard lessons.
The last good OS that MS had was Win 3.11 for work groups installed on top
of DOS 6.22. When Win 95 came out I would have switched then gladly
as I had a Mac and some apples to play with. But my concern then,
and still is weather Mac will run any of the windows software I have.
Like games and utility's and all kinds of stuff. Is all my software gonna
just be useless?

Yes, that was my excuse too originally but the truth is that I used to pay for updates all the time to the Windows software so getting similar software that works with Mac OS X is the same. If there is a good program like Excel or Word or a good game there is also a Mac version. It turned out that it really wasn't an issue.
Windows updates are free, upgrades to new Win X is not. Check the price difference between a Mac and a PC, it would pay for many upgrades. But it's a Ford vs Chevy type of argument....
WoooHoooo! I got them back! Somehow my FF user profile got renamed to default. The backup files were in the "default" user's profile directory. I copied one of the recent backups to my user name's FF directory and it now showed up on the FF restore page. I selected it and did a FF restore, reopened FF and there they were! I'm so happy I could drink an adult beverage! Thanks everyone who offered a suggestion, even you Q-man!
Good to hear Ax....one thing I'd suggest that I do is export a copy of all your browser info, namely bookmarks. I keep a copy of that file with me all the time on a thumb drive. I also keep a copy on my Google drive. I also keep a hopefully we'll guarded file with all user names and passwords. If I didn't I'd never remember all of them. It's two pages long!!
Hey Ax,
Congratulations on getting your browser restored!!!!
I think it was 48tl8ford (Dick) who recommended getting a Buffalo
hard drive to back up to. They are cheap & can store a huge amount of data - about the size of a thick book. Around $100. Very easy to set up.
We've had ours forever - saved my bacon numerous times.
Set your backups to roll over every 7 days - that way you can go back & restore yourself to 7 days ago if you need to go back a bit to avoid a virus or crash.
Glad it all came back. I use Google Chrome Browser. They have a login which stores all of your bookmarks and stuff like that, in case of such disasters.
