Ive been restoring my grandpas old farm truck for a while now. Its an 87 F250 with a 351c in it (Previous owner swapped it from a diesel). Ive noticed that it has a weird sound coming from this mystery valve. It almost sounds like a bad piston or something. I can put my hand on top of the valve and feel suction, but when I cover the valve the noise goes away. It has hoses that screw into the exhaust manifold. We have been wanting to take away the emission system for a LONG time now but dont know how to do it. There are hundreds of colored vacuum lines that go into valves he or I have never seen. Does anyone know what this does and if I can remove it? Would it be a good idea to pull all the weird lines since half are cracked and most of the valves are disconnected?
The only things a carbed motor need to function are a PCV valve in one valve cover and a vent in the other, and if the carb has vacuum secondaries or the distributor has vacuum advance supply manifold vacuum to them. Everything else can go, just make sure to plug all holes in the exhaust or unused vacuum ports in the intake.

Thanks for the tips! Any idea what this is or why its on there? Im thinking of pulling everything tomorrow night and hopefully the truck will run better! I have vacuum lines running everywhere right now, honestly I have no clue where to start pulling. Im in no way a mechanic, just your average truck lover with basic knowledge trying to get this thing running right.
It's smog pump air injection stuff.
Cap it off, remove it, weld it closed. Not needed.
Are you sure it's a Cleveland. The valve cover looks a little small. Hard to see but I just never thought Cleveland's had any smog stuff.
Being carbd, do as conanski said, and remove all the crap from the engine. Only things needing vacuum is heater box, distributor, and transmission if it's a c6 or c4.

Previous owner said it was a 351c, but knowing how reliable people are adays, I have no clue. It does have a c6 trans
Looks exactly like the smog set up on a lot of 351w...
Thats what Im thinking. Ive spent hours looking around on the forum and found someone who just cut it off. He also showed the bracket for the smog pump, which mine has (just without the pump). Going to pull everything off today. Ill post pics of the rebuild, hopefully I get it right!
87 351, originally it would have had two air pumps on it, old style v belts running all the accessories and then small serpentine belts driving each of those air pumps via dual pulley arraignment. Serpentine pulleys added onto front of the V belt pulleys, one driven by Alt the other by water pump IIRC. It was a belt drive system to behold, an oddity the likes of which had yet to be seen!
Anyway yea air pumps having been eliminated no reason to keep those tubes just in the way/exhaust leak, remove and cap off those ports in the manifolds.
Later if/when one or both of them crack and need replaced, new manifolds are available (used to be anyway) without those air ports.
Or a set of headers. I used a set of bolts on my tubes in my manifolds. Cut the tubes and cut a slant in a bolt like a tap and ran em in with with the impact
Cleveland has sbf bellhousing pattern. You're thinking 351m that has the bbf 460 bellhousing.
Valve covers of a 351w are the same as 302 and are only like 4" wide. 351c shares valve cover with 351m and is like 6" wide.
Cleveland has upper radiator hose coming out of the block, Windsor has upper hose coming out of intake like a 302.
Thank you for clarifying that. I was not sure if it was the modified or 351c that had the bb bolt pattern.
It has a c6 trans but ill check tomorrow but it may be the windsor then. Today I pulled every single vacuum line I could find with the exception of the one coming from the trans and the brake booster. If Im right the theres a valve in the top of the left valve cover that needs a line going to the bottom of the carb? Tomorrow, if needed Im going to put that in. Are there any other lines that need to be installed? Im letting the air valve for the exhaust sit in PB Blaster all night to loosen her up. Again, im just a weekend mechanic! I appreciate all the help.
