I bought my truck just after xmas with 46,000 kms on it. Quite new. AS I've put on almost 18,000 kms on since I bought it I recently noticed my motor is quite a bit loader than it used to be. There is more of a diesel sound to it. More injector noise one would think. Its one of the things that I've always like about the 6.7's. they are super quiet. What would cause my engine to get loader ?????? Concerning !
I've been thinking the same thing about mine Seemed quieter when I first got it, now it seems to rev more and be noisier before shifting up. Maybe I'm just getting used to it though. Got min in Nov with 64000km, now about 67000km.
They do get louder. Is there an app for our smartphones that would measure dB? I think there is. There are enough members here to do comparisons, just at idle after a cold start and after up to running temp.
I could provide a level on a motor with 90,000 miles on it.
I would not attribute the noise to the motor "loosening up" because these things are built with crazy precision and the oils used keep them running smooth for a long time.
I would assume you're correct about injectors and maybe valve seating. The air flow through the intake and turbo seems to get louder too but doesn't make sense to me. Probably just injectors breaking in and working more freely and smoothly over time.
I'll be asking my dealer about this... also a mech that I know mentioned there is a recall on the glow plugs.. His buddy had a bad glow plug and it ended up coming apart and I believe it took out his motor or his injectors....( can't remember exact details) . Anyone hear of a recall on glowplugs ???
Also.. could this be a fuel difference ??? Maybe a different type of fuel or bad fuel ???
There was a Trucku episode on their website that addressed the increased noise was a symptom of an injector failing and the other injectors had to compensate to keep the engine running. The repair was not on a 6.7. The repair wasn't something I might try alone.

Yes, I notice a substantial difference in both performance and sound with fuel from different stations. This is one reason I'm now religious about adding 8 oz of PM22 to every 30 gal fill-up. Even then the occasional tank full will produce a different sound level from the motor. I believe it is a matter of the cetane level and the amount of lubricity in the fuel.
Whew - guess I run my radio too loud then
I was just commenting how the engine sound is great - just sounds strong - but that the exhaust sound is HORRIBLE - like a friggin blow dryer !!!
Maybe it's just that you are driving it differently than you used to without realizing it ?!? It's more of an appliance now, than a novelty ?
I marveled at how mine stayed above 20 mpg so much when new.... now it hovers around 15 mpg if not towing - I drive it differently now that I 'know' it....
Mine has definately goten louder... Its loader than trucks with more kms on them than mine while parked beside them.. You can noticably hear the difference !

Hi RussB,
I will be pleased to lend a hand, my friend. Have you taken the vehicle to your dealer for diagnosis? Please PM me the VIN, full name, telephone number and dealer info; I will loop in your regional customer service manager.

I bet it is the winter fuel ya'll are using right now. Wait until the spring thaw and see if it sounds quitter again, might even sound back to normal like my southern raised motor

Good thought.... but I bought this truck dec.27th... I've always have been on winter fuel since I owned it. I was super quiet when I bought it.. Now is is louder for sure.
