So I'm cutting away the old exhaust with a sawzaw and saw this on the back axle. there was a broke rubber hose (not pictured) that ran from this to a clip on the frame and the hose was capped. I can't imagine its purpose. Those are brake lines.
It's the axle vent. Allows air to go in and out as the differential heats up and cools down. Make sure the hose is connected and ran high up under the bed if you plan on taking it through water or off road.

^^Right, OP before you put the new hose on that make sure you take a small allen wrench or screw driver and push down the hole to make sure its not plugged
