I have a 2002 f250 powerstroke, while driving it smokes pure white smoke and feels like its loading up and will start shaking if I floor it, it will rev slowly popping like its loaded up then cleans out runs good for a 1/4 mile than same thing. My temp gauge stopped working and it just seemed to get worse. Stuck it on a scanner and it didnt have any codes but was saying the engine temp was -211°f. I got a new sending unit didint fix any of the problems. Does anyon have any ideas?..thanks zack
Ignore the coolant temp reading, a scan tool can not give you that reading because the PCM does not look at coolant temp on a 7.3l. If you want too motor engine temp look at engine oil temp........but let's forget about temp all together for a while and get this thing running.
So you have lots of white smoke and no power. Sometimes it will run good for 1/4 of a mile or so then it lacks power again and starts smoking. Correct?
Given those symptoms alone I would start with fuel,....filter good, good fuel, how's the fuel pressure?
You also want to look at the oil......is it full, how is the condition (30k overdue for a change?) what kind of oil are you running? Did you add any snake oil to the engine oil? ( Lucas prolong etc)
Does it do it all the time? Just at start up, cold weather, etc? My 97 ran like that on cold mornings when the glow plugs went bad but it straightened up once it warmed up.
Yes, tons of white smoke and no power til it cleans its self out. then it runs fine till it loads up again. if i stop at a stop light and don't kind keep my foot on the throttle it wont even take off until i stick it in neutral and clean it out then it will move. i have changed the fuel filter probably less than 5000 miles ago, oil and oil filter motor craft motor oil and filter around 15,000 miles ago. i have ran diesle clean through it and still no difference. i don't think its bad fuel cause i have been driving it like this for quite awhile now and have ran to empty and refilled and does the same thing still.. not sure what the fuel pressure is . Where at do you check the fuel pressure on these things? its not low on oil and has no check engine light on.
Yes it does this all the time no matter what.
Scanned it again this morning it had 2 codes, hi low side open cyl 4 and cyl 6. Not sure what that means?
That is an injector code. Either the injectors are bad, wires shorted out or not connected all the way. Try wiggling the connector and make sure it is fully connected and see how it does.
The injectors are under the valve covers, so you'll have to pull those to do any kind of check, and if you have to pull the injectors you will need a special tool. First thing you should do is pick up some kind of service manual on your truck - I prefer Chiltons, as they are more detailed but still a good price. I can't recall the test procedure on the injectors, but it talks about it in the book.
White smoke is a symptom of either unburnt fuel or coolant going out the exhaust. So the injector codes make sense.
15k on an oil change? If you aren't running synthetic you'd best change that. I know some of the boys are going to jump in and say 'if an oil analysis...' blah blah blah. I wouldn't go more than 6k on regular oil in one of these, and no more than 12k on synthetic oil. How is your oil level? If you have gone 15k on regular oil, your injector issues might be caused by that - remember that your injectors need good oil to work properly. If your oil has broken down (which by now I'm sure it has, since I'm betting you are running regular oil), it can cause injector issues. Not to mention the soot and possible fuel built up in the oil from normal running. This can take out the external and internal orings in the injectors. The external ones can be replaced, the internal ones cannot. From your symptoms I'm betting those two injectors are junk and just letting fuel flow through them from bad orings. The other six would be suspect in my mind.
You can drive a diesel hard and it will treat you good, but you have to take care of it. This means doing regular maintenance like changing the oil at reasonable intervals.
Driverside. I am with Josh.. Could be simply the driverside valve cover harness had come undone or came undone under the cover. I would unclip the connector and perform a ohm check.. Against the center pin (common)
The pins are
I pulled each side apart, tested injectors by unpluging them while truck was idling. Had for that did absolutely nothing when I unplugged them the others would nearly killed the truck when unplugged. So im assuming thos four are not working properly?
Possibly, But also could be the connector inside the valve cover has come apart or an issue with the harness. Either way i think the cover needs to come off so you can inspect 4 & 6
