I have a 99 eb with the 5.4 and I was thinking about putting a performance ignition system(jacobs, msd). But because the 5.4 has a coil pak for each plug, I want to know if anyone has done this and if it made a difference ? Thanks
I know in the mustang world with the 5.4 and 4.6 people are having no problems with 15 lbs. of boost which whould have cylinder pressures in the 1500's dymamic. If a factory system can jump a spark in that environment the expy's will never have an issue. Spend the money on a decent exhaust.
I wondered the same thing back in '97, so I called Jacobs factory. they told me that the Expedition has a world class top of the line system and it would not be an improvement to try to fit a Jacobs system to it. I took them at their word. Last year I called again to see it the same held true. It did. You've got the best, don't mess with it!
Jacobs said that it was the best system, I have had noting but problems with the coil paks. Condensation and water go in the #4 and short it out, and sometimes a few other coil paks also. I want to change the system to high performance one to eliminate this problem.
The system is not at fault. Poor maintenance or inadequate sheilding is from water is. Very few vehicles have a coil problem despite what you might think from reading forums or from your own experience. Get with a good mechanic and determine why you are getting water on them and keep that from happening. IF a hose leaks fix it. IF a wheel well shield is not in place, get one. If youi wash youir engine with a hose while it's hot, don't.
If you get water on plugs and wires without coils, they can crack and short out. The problems is water. Get rid of it. Don't treat the symptoms, fix the cause.
tsdrallyer is on the money, get rid of the stupid spring clamp above the #4 coil pack. The individual coil pack system is the best idea possible no wires no noise and a minimal of voltage drop to the plug. Use a good dielectric grease on the packs and you should not have any problems blasting through water. As far as an aftermarket system nothing is going to be able to control 8 cyclinders and get along with the ford ECU in todays emissions friendly environment.
