Water pump took a dump...

I've posted several threads about my cooling issues. After replacing my dorman bottle with a factory ford option now I have coolant leak from the weep hole :-(

So a new water pump on its way from Clay. What a joy. I really wish I could get some months in before I had to do work on my truck...

No help needed, just had to share.

Don't you hate that. Just want a little stretch before having to do something else. At least it's nothing I would consider major.

It could be worse. When mine "dumped", it was pouring a pencil-sized stream from the rear seal, and I was almost two hours from home at the end of a work day, trying to get back home. Fortunately, I had driven to Advance Auto in the town near where I had been working, so I at least had the parts and some loaner tools available to do the job there in the parking lot.

WOW I'm grateful for my situation. I couldn't imagine doing the job in parking lot.

Not that I'd ever want to, but I could see doing it in a parking lot, save for removal of the fan. I don't think I'd enjoy doing that without the air chisel.

It was NOT a fun learning experience, since I had never done a water pump before, but I got it done with no leaks and made it home about 11pm that night. I also discovered how sharp the edges of the fan blades are, too, and have a couple of scars to prove it!

Pete I must say I'm impressed. Glad it all worked out. I know these go out time to time, just wish stuff would stop going out on me.

Just had the pleasure of replacing the water pump on my 2000. Aside from the fan clutch being way tighter then it should have been, the job went relatively smooth. It was my 1st time replacing a water pump as well. Some insight and help from a few friends also made quite a difference!

Generally speaking, it's pretty easily removed with the fan clutch removal tool a person can rent from Autozone, or a similar auto parts house.

I should probably replace my water pump soon. No sign of leaks, but it has almost 100k on it. I'm going to put some serious miles on my truck in the next few months & I don't want any surprises.
My fan nut is chewed up pretty good. I'm guessing the PO used a air chisel to break it free.

I have lost 3 water pumps within 2000 miles of 170k each.

Second one I chalked up to bad luck, third one.....

Wow, that's bad luck. I really don't want to have that issue. I hope I'll replace it once and be good for another 200k miles.

2002 Excursion 7.3 PSD. About to start on water pump replacement. Got to get the fan clutch off. My Clinton manual says Fan nut is right threaded, turn counter clockwise to loosen. Everything I've read on here has been Left thread, clockwise to loosen. Which way is it. Thanks in advance.

I have to go out and look at my truck, but if my memory is correct, from the front of the truck, it turns to the right to loosen... I'll check when I get to my truck and confirm unless someone beats me to it.

Glad yours was just leaking...I just had to replace mine due to a bearing failure. Thankfully I was able to shut her down quickly and the pump impeller did minimal damage to the inside of the front cover. It's a strange sight to pop your hood and see your cooling fan and water pump pulley hanging at a strange angle off the water pump. Oh yeah, and when that happens, you can't hold anything still in order to remove the fan clutch, so you get to remove the entire busted assembly as one piece.
