hi all.i have a noobie question im sure has been addressed before. my rig is a 2001 f350 2wh drive. 7.3 eng. i bought the truck at 134000 mi.not long after the purchase i started feeling the tranny was not quite right. now at 142000 mi the tranny took a dump. i had a ford reconditioned unit installed @ a total price of 3500.00 including a new external cooler per ford instructions. i haul an 11ft. camper weighing about 4500 lbs. never having owned an automatic before i want to use it properly.while hauling the camper can i just put it in drive and forget it or do i not use the overdrive at all or kick it out of overdrive when approaching a steep grade. my owners manual do not address this at all.any advice will be appreciated . thanks pat. ps i hope this is in the proper area and formst.

At 4500 lbs, I can't imagine you would ever really need to take it out of OD. But what is generally recommended is to run it like normal unless the transmission is hunting for a gear between 3rd and OD while climbing hills. Then you should turn the OD off and just run in 3rd until you're back on level ground. Again, I don't think this is going to be a big issue with the weight you're towing unless we're talking about some really steep hills.

Typically, 4500lbs should not require taking it out of OD. The big thing is getting an exhaust gas temp gauge and a tranny temp gauge to be sure. If you are running extended at a decent grade with a stock exhaust, you could potentially build up exhaust temps that could cause issues. I would at LEAST put a real tranny temp gauge on it.

I've pulled a 16ft dovetail flatbed with a small car (Grand Am, etc.) on it multiple times. I never ran across the scales, but my guess would be somewhere around 5-6k in weight. Truck ran like there was nothing back there. OD stayed on. No problems.

With the 9k 5th wheel, I only turn OD off on long or steep grades. Flat running at highway speed in OD is no problem.

You'll want to be easy on that rebuild for a little while. She will need a break-in period.
