Cruise Control and High Idle Problem

My cruise control is working correctly during some driving sessions and then won't even come on during others. I replaced the brake light switch at the brake pedal thinking that was the problem but it did not help. Another part of this problem is that my high idle switch works sometimes and then causes the wrench symbol to be displayed at other times. Any ideas what could be causing this? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Try the brake switch at the master cylinder.

My truck has recently started doing a similar thing with high idle, sometimes it works and sometimes I throw the switch and nothing happens but I get the wrench? I don't use cruise much but I'll check it....

I forgot to mention that the high idle causes the wrench sometimes, other times it does nothing and sometimes it works.

When I have the issue my high idle won't work, and the wrench symbol appears. Sometimes it works fine and I have no issues or wrench

I replaced the switch at the master cylinder and that fixed the problem. So glad to have my high idle and cruise back. It is a PITA to get to but not terrible overall. The part is about $27.

It's pretty sad that after 14 years Ford is still having the same problem with the same part. My old F250 (2001) and Excursion (2001) both had this same failure. The switch starts to leak fluid internally and shorts itself out, causing all manner of funky issues.

Easy fixes once you know where to look, but for folks that haven't discovered FTE yet...good grief Ford, come ON for pete's sake.

It was $23.63 at AMAZON.

Yes, everything is still working great. Fixed all the high idle and cruise control problems.

I bet it will. Sounds like you are having the same issues. One suggestion for the installation is watch the vacuum lines. I broke one with the 7/8" wrench because the loosening and tightening radius is very limited and it was very brittle.
