Was changing ball joints in my 1995 F150 yesterday, and while I had the axles out, some of the fluid leaked on the floor. It was redish color, like tranny fluid. Any ideas? I thought you were supposed to put gear oil in those Dana 44s.

Yes, I just smelled of it. It is definitely tranny fluid. I have a Motor Service Manual for my truck, on the way here. But, right now, all I have is a cheap Haynes. It covers 1980-1995 (mine is a 95). 15 years, I think that is to big of a stretch. Anyway, it says that it is supposed to take gear oil. It doesn't specify what weight. That being said, I've never seen anything but gear oil, go into a differential
Now, I just got off of the phone with the Ford garage parts department, and the guy I spoke to right off the bat, said that it took Mercon 5, but then, he discussed it with someone in the backround, and they said it is definitely supposed to be gear oil. I am so glad that I caught this before I put it back together.
