i have a 1990 f150 4X4. how har is it to replace the fuel pumps. ive seen the pumps and it looks like they have to attached to the tubes that go in the tank. is this a very hard job. anything i should look for when doing this, other than not smoking.
I've never done it myself, but from all the discussions in the past about it here, you have two options. You can either drop the gas tanks, or lift the bed. The problem people have mentioned about lifting the bed is breaking the bolts loose if they are rusted.
Try to empty the tanks as much as possible which ever way you choose to do it.
The bottom and the top of the pump should have inlet/outlet. The bottom of the pump gets a screen attached that should push on the pump. The top of the pump gets a line threaded onto it. That's the outlet for the pump. You should see two lines "going into" the tank. One is the supply line and the other is the return line.
It's rather easy once you get to the pump. The hard part is getting to it.
I've cut access panels in the bed of trucks before because of the design. All fuel injection pumps are located in the tank and dropping the tank is always a PITA.
