Question What is causing these noises?

Don't you just love noise questions? at 7000 miles I had my tires rotated..at a Good Year Auto place..they also do my oil.
They suggested the tire rotation..the truck is a year old and it sounded like a good idea. This was a couple of weeks ago.

Last week or so I noticed a sound..like a rubbing sound..sort of like when you were a kid you put playing cards in the wheels of your bike to make that tick-tick-tick sound. I'm hearing this up until about 15 MPH...but I'm guessing it's there all the time..but with normal acceleration and with the Flowmaster I don't hear it anymore. I hear it on acceleration and deacceleration between 5-15 MPH.

I decided to lock the hubs to see what happens..and I heard a whistling sound...so I changed them back to auto and the whistling stopped. Did something get broken during the tire rotation? Now what? How do I explain this to the tire place?

Thanks for any thoughts.

What is causing these noises?

Has the truck been in 4x4 recently? If so then a stuck or partially locked hub might be the culprit. Otherwise it sounds like a wheel bearing in the front.

The front bearings on a 2002 SD are sealed units no way to repack, or lube them. If you suspect a front bearing jack the wheel up off the ground and grab the tire at the 6 o'clock and 12 o'clock posistions. Try to rock the wheel/hub assenbly back and forth. If you feel any play at all you have a bad front bearing.

If you suspect the truck is stuck in 4x4 with the truck in park slide underneath grab the front drive shaft and give it a turn. It should turn freely with just a little effort. If a hub, or the transfer case, is stuck you will not be able to move the front drive shaft.

Of all the front bearings that I've ever replaced first you will notice a noise when putting weight on that wheel in a turn. Such as going onto the interstate thru a big circle or going straight down the road at 40 mph and move the steering wheel back and fourth to put weight on each front wheel. when I would take that bad bearing out never would I have known it was bad upon examining it and they were never loose at that point. I suppose if you let it go to the point that it destroys itself it will be loose..
I suppose there are exceptions!!

Anyhow sure you don't have a vacume leak in the front end and a partially locked hub.. In 2wd grab each axle and turn it by hand right behind the wheel. Should turn free.
