Back on topic, when can we seriously have the reputation policy changed? This 25-person minimum is annoying.
never.
like i said, it used to be 5 or 10 with no limit on how much rep was given. after the abuse of the system, the 10 rep per day and 25 different people before reping someone again was put into effect.
Can someone please explain what the "rep" system actually is? I have been a member here for four years now, and I keep hearing about it but I never see any evidence of it anywhere like OBN's "thanked" tally by your avatar. I have never given anyone a "rep" because I don't know how. I have no idea if I've ever gotten a "rep" or where to look to see if I have. My question is, what's the point? If someone gives me good advice I quote their post and thank them where everyone can read it. I can do this as often as I like... Am I missing something???
^^^^^ +1; it is helpful to finally see the rep rules in black and white, but 25 for the "spreading" rule is exceedingly high for a community this size. Like in a different ball park. I never would have guessed it would be that high. Five sounds like a reasonable number; possibly even three. I wonder if it's possible to program it so that you could rep the same person twice in a row, but not more than twice before "spreading" your reps to 3-5 others. As said, there are times when a particular member comes up with multiple rep-worthy contributions in fairly short order.
We could start by repping everyone who has a suggestion about how to improve the rep process......
My personal opinion would be something more like this, or do away with it all together. But that's just me.

easiest explanation of the rep system is this:
reputation is a way to give a member a short private message for posting good or helpful information.
to give rep, click on the little box on the top right side of the post window with the check mark in it. it looks like this:
then you can type your message in the box.
it really is not a big thing anymore after the rep parties ruined it.
back in the day you could tell who the helpful people were by looking under their post count and seeing how many little green "chicklets" were there. the more "greenies", the more helpful the person was or they had just been around forever. new users usually only have one "greenie"
to see if you have received rep from someone, click on the "user CP' on the left of the blue bar on top of the page.
scroll down in you user control panel. under subscribed threads is "latest reputation received"
there you will be able to read the last 15 rep messages received..
Shutting down the "rep party" makes sense. But think about it - does anybody here even know of 25 other users they see posting regularly, let alone posting things they'd like to rep? That number just doesn't make sense. Even 10 would be a more reasonable number, esp. along with the other rules.
Thanks. That was helpful, and I found a couple cool rep notes that I would otherwise have missed. Wish I could read all of them, but at least now I know to look there. Concealing the points system should have been sufficient to stop the rep parties but it is what it is. I'll use it to the extent I can.

I don't like the 25-minimum policy, and moreso, I don't like how veterans who benefited from the original policy still retain the reputation they obtained. I suspect if the moderators promoted a plan that cleared all reputation levels to zero AND installed a 25-minimum policy, there would be much bigger uproar.
rep is really nothing more than a way for someone to say thank you for helping, but only do it in private.
the stink being made about the current system is exactly why it was put in place by the administration in the first place, so people could not rep the same people all the time. .
and as a side note, i got around 7500 of my current 10,000+ rep points since the change was made.
I can understand that, but that last part, that should be more like a 5 than a 25, IMO of course. Because I know for myself I spend very little time in the other forums compared to the IDI forum here and there is not 25+ active people giving advice in this forum. So I try to spread reps around when I see good advice, but it's usually the same people giving the advice so I can't give it to them on other posts/issues like genscripter said.
And I need to rep myself here, I agree with myself on this idea.
