Ok here i go again round 2, I have my 86 f250 with a 351w HO with a bad ping iv been chasing forever its had a new edelbrock 600 cfm iv eliminated the egr with a 1 inch closed spacer has a new reman ford distributor with msd cap rotor and wires new motorcraft spark plugs, Iv tried adjusting the vacuum advance and base timing i bought the meatring rod kit today and still a no go it pings at cursing speed goes away with more or less throttle i also tried a 160 t stat what else could it be iv been driving it the vacuum advance hose off for 6 moths still runs great but my gas mileage is really low like 6 mpg i also tried 91 octane gas im truly stumped here
I would like to help but cannot get my head around what you wrote. If you could write it such that I could easily understand, especially the part about the vacuum advance, I'd be happy to help.
it pings bad with the vacuum advance hooked up,right now the base timing is at 10 degrees with my new distributor still pings iv tried moving the base timing down and adjusting the vacuum advance but nothing has worked
So, when you say "nothing works" you didn't really mean it as disconnecting the vacuum advance stops the pinging. And, that being the case you have too much overall advance, caused by one or more of these problems:
Too much initial lead.
Too much mechanical advance.
Too much vacuum advance.
You really need to read and follow the adjustment procedures on the Crane website. But as a quick and dirty, see if your vacuum advance is adjustable by inserting a small Allen wrench through the vacuum port.
I have tried adjusting the vacuum advance with the Allen wrench i adjusted it all the way out for the least amount of advance and iv tried backing the initial off as far as i can with the vacuum advance hooked up and i still have the same ping
I'm still having a hard time understanding. Please use a few periods and capitalization as I don't read textese. There are a lot of people wanting help and if I can't understand someone easily I find my time better used elsewhere.
Having said that, I highly recommend reading and following the Crane instructions. There is no way to diagnose this in a few posts over the internet when it takes many steps in the Crane document. However, before you do that you must ensure that the harmonic balance has not slipped. I've seen many that have slipped and when you set something like 10 degrees you get more like 20. Obviously that will cause a problem.
Have you done that? Do you need instructions on how to do that?
Sometimes you will have problems running an de smoged engine with a reman distributor with a stock mechanical advance curve, with the vacuum advance hooked up it will do weird things.
