Question transmission seapage normal?

I recently purchased a 94 F150 with the 300 L6. I've noticed seapage from the transmission both where it bolts to the motor and where it bolts to the driveshaft. Never enough to leave any drops on the ground, just always a little beading around the gaskets. It has 100k miles with the original tranny. Does anyone know if this is normal? Also, with the manual transmission, how do you check the fluid level? Thanks

I couldn't really say if the seapage is normal or not. My truck has 122K and like yours it does have seepage not enough to drip but it is obviously there. As for the fluid level there should be 2 bolts on the side of your tranny. The one that is higher up on the tranny should be labeled Fill. Remove the fill bolt, if transmission fluid starts leaking out of the side immediately reinstall the bolt because your fluid is obviously full. If none drains out remove the bolt completely stick your finger in the hole to see if you can feel where the fluid level is. If you can't feel the level then you know it's atleast a little low. Just add fluid untill it reaches the bottom of the hole and reinstall the bolt.

I have a '92 F150 4.9L M50D that I drove off the lot new. The transmission probably started to leak in '94. The Ford house wanted to fix it for me about 6 years ago at great cost. I told them I would live with it. I change the fluid on a very regular basis so I do not worry about running dry. The M50D has been great for the 11 years I have owned this truck. Good luck with yours...I am sure it is fine. Just keep the fluid fresh.

I have the seepage on at least the front, so betweeen all of us I guess it is normal.

Has anyone here ever replaced the M5OD rear seal (or is the rear bearing, if it has one, esy to get to with the driveshaft off)? I would like to do so as I think the trip I had to make with a bad front u-joint might have caused undue wear.

Best,

I've read on here that the leaking of the m50d is some kind of plugs, rubber i guess in the top of the transmission. I dont quite remember what it was, but it didnt seem taht they were too hard to replace. Mine leaks too, but transmission fluid is cheap and i'm lazy.

I rebuilt my M5OD and in the process I replaced the front and rear seal. To do the rear you have to split the case on the 4X4 I seem to recall... You can do the 4X2 from the rear though. To do the front seal you have to pull the front cover plate.

Cool, thanks.

Since I have a 4x2, I'll try to find out a little more about replacing the rear before I try anything.

Regards,

IF your tranny has a slip yoke it is real simple, Just pull the drive shaft pry out the old rubber seal and pound in the new on. I am thinking The mazda has a fixed yoke though.

I could be wrong, but I believe it is a slip-yoke (at least it slips out when I have to change u-joints...), though the yoke goes in there quite a ways, so I thought the seal would be deep, instead of right at where I could pry it off.

I just put a seal on the back of my 1356BW with the slip yoke design. It protrudes about an inch beyond the transfercase, Its kind of like a boot that is really flexable. The think cost me like 40 bucks. I just cant stand anythink that leaks or drips. Its worth it.

Thanks fellas, I'll let you know how it goes when I get around to changing the seals.....tricky part is I'm a country boy stuck in the city at the moment and it's really hard to drop the tranny in the middle of the parking lot and not get people upset......little midnight beer drinking/truck fixing may be in order.
