Side Molding

86 XLT lariat here. lower trim (runs along lower body line and over wheel arches) is all held on by clips mounted with holes in the body. I kind of wanted to get rid of it but its all there and in good shape, it would probably look pretty awesome all polished up.

RE: tailgate trim. yep removing it leaves several exposed holes. half the red plastic was broken off mine and it looked terrible. Even with holes on the tailgate I still think it looks better, you can see the stamped FORD logo in the middle.

The wheel arch mldgs. seen in this photo are the ones I had described as being held on with the barrel clips. And the rest of the mldgs. in this photo are held on with the plastic clips and weld on rivets, and the metal clips utilizing studs and acorn style nuts on the backside. I forgot to mention those style in my previous posts.

FWIW the FORD stamped letters on the tailgates went away with the redesigned truck for the 92 MY. From then thru 96 was a FORD decal that was place on the tailgate. In the upper right corner of the center raised section on the tailgate. Then on the 97-98 250 hd's and 350's the tailgates got the series classification nameplate that said HEAVY DUTY on the bottom in the lower left corner of the raised center section of the tailgate. They are held on with 2 sided tape and locator tabs that go into corresponding holes in the tailgate. Hope this helps.

Further, that I've owned 5 of these trucks and none of them used the trim with tape. So, in my experience the styles with clips were far more common.

My point was that the upper statement was not true - there were three styles of upper trim and two of those used plastic retainers. Only one used two-sided tape.

Right: One of the pages listing the clips.
1973/79 truck catalog shows pics of each clip next to the part number. Unfortunatly, the idiots at FoMoCo didn't do the same with 1980/89.

But the circled letters that correspond to 1980/89 are not the same as 1973/79!
People would have to find part numbers that begin w/a D in the 1980/89 catalog, then search for them in the 1973/79 catalog.
So, I'm not going to do this...cuz it's a PITA rigamarole and it won't be long before some people start asking questions.

Thanks, guys. I was fairly sure it was aftermarket, but I wanted to be certain.
My stripes, on the other hand...while they're definitely aftermarket as well, they're part of the charm of the truck, and will be redone after painting. Nothing says "1980" quite like pimptastic white tape stripes!

The 1985 - 1986 upper moulding in the second picture is of my own truck (permalink #3) and it is held on with double-sided tape.
What is interesting about this particular moulding is that it was featured on the front cover and throughout the sales brochure of the early first edition 1985 models. The later second edition 1985 sales brochure showed the exact same pictures as the first printing except on every single truck, the trim moulding was changed to the lower style that is seen on friction's truck (permalink #9).
I have both issues of the 1985 sales brochures, and there is no mention at all of the upper moulding in the second printing that was showcased in the first printing.

Clips came with the mouldings. In order to post pics, I'd have to post all the pages from the 1980/89 catalog for the part numbers, then all the pages from the 1973/79 catalog for the pics.
