Help with Fuel Pump

I hope someone can help me with a fuel problem. I have a 1987 Ranger 2.9 and I had both fuel pumps and the fuel filter replaced several months ago. The new pump seems to whine much more loudly than the original and also seems to run all of the time. I thought the old one run ran for a few seconds and then shut off but maybe it was just much more quiet. At any rate, the truck wouldn't start one morning and I don't hear the pump running anymore. Is there a fuse to check before replacing the relay because I don't see one in the fuse panel. Any help would be appretiated because this old truck is taking more and more money.

thanks...
Cliff

Help with Fuel Pump

Welcome to FTE!!!

The pumps should shut off after a few seconds if the truck is not running. If you don't hear them check for power at the pump(s).

Help with Fuel Pump

Thanks for answering. I was wondering if the replacement fuel pump should whine that loud? Much more than the original Ford pump. Also, should the pump cycle on and off while the truck is running such as when at an idle? This one runs all of the time when the key is on (engine running and not running). I think I might spring for a motorcraft pump if it is quiet...

Thanks to everyone here for helping us out.

Help with Fuel Pump

Can't comment on the noise but the pump should NOT run for more than a few seconds when the engine is off, this is a safety feature in case you are in a accident, don't want to pump a full take of gas on the ground while someone is stuck in the vehicle.

Help with Fuel Pump

I have a 94 ranger 2.3L 5speed manual, when I got the truck a year ago had same problem with fuel pump shutting off or not starting. Try replacing the fuel pump relay. It's the one that is located in the power distribution box next to the battery. It will say fuel pump relay on the cover, it costs about $10.00 at any parts store. Let me know if this helps or not.
