has anyone changed the output shaft seal (pitman arm shaft) on a 93? just wondering how hard it is or if I would just be better off getting a different one. I'm getting tired of dumping in power steering fluid every 2-3 days and leaving puddles (or small lakes) all over the place. Thanks for any help.
This is possibly the most "fun" I've ever had fixing the Bronco. Here goes....oh and YES I actually did this to my '92 and it worked like a charm. Remove the pitman arm and any spacers, washers etc.. Place a five gallon bucket under the bottom of the steering gear. Start the truck. Turn the wheel hard to one side and the seal will blow out the bottom. Be prepared to shut the truck off right away as letting it run will pump ALL the fluid out of the system in a hurry (obviously). Clean up the mess....the bucket is to catch the bulk of the bleeding and the seal. Install the new seal. Reassemble the pitman arm etc.. Top off the pump. Test run for leaks.
This was the advice of two parts counter guys and two ASE certified mechanics that I have been buying parts from and letting fix my cars for years. There is no provision for removing the seal any other way. And its kinda fun too. Reinstalling is easy...seat the seal and reassemble.
HI, hmm Having read how to remove the seal I have to think about this.
As much fun as it would be to "BLOW" the seal out. I have to think that there might be stuff in the gear from the heating and cooling. ie little grit and dust particles.
Replacing a steering gear is realitivly easy. However, clean clean clean. Take the vehilce to the local car wash and use the pressure clean to clean the entire area and hose connections.
At home use a lot of brake clearner spray to make sure there is nothing dirty.
Next, you will need to rent a pitman arm seperator. You will need a good set of wrenches to free the steering gear from the frame.
You will need a torque wrench to put it back on.
On the difficulty scale, its a 3, for muscle its a 5.
