4R100 pan debris

Hey all,

I had my 4R100 rebuilt by a local shop. The trans is being controlled by a PCS controller. The transmission was upgraded with extra clutches, Transgo Tugger HD, and a triple disc converter. I drove the truck for about 200 miles and noticed the 1 to 2 shift was a little slow to complete. (about 1.5 seconds) I brought it back to the shop and they agreed, but said it was shifting fine otherwise. They recommended opening up the Transgo calibration plate holes because they drilled them out to the smaller of the recommended sizes. I did as they recommended but noticed a lot of debris on the pan magnet when I dropped the pan. Can anyone tell me if this is normal on a rebuild with less than 500 miles? I dont want to go back to the shop without some advice. The 1 to 2 shift has gotten faster since the hole was enlarged but still is not as fast or as firm as it should be. Any advice would be appreciated.

Get an in-line filter (preferably one with some high-gauss magnets) and clean that ring magnet.

The longer you leave that stuff circulating in the fluid, the more wear it will cause.

The initial few miles are where a great percentage of wear will occur, as parts "wear in".

You likely have most of the initial wear particles already dumped, so change the oil, clean the ring magnet, add an in-line filter, and press on.

225,000 on the original trans here, but with some precautions taken along the way.

Springerpop has some excellent advice!!!

If you don't get a magnet filter system you should use an inline OEM/OE filter following rebuild. There is a TSB. I told my Buddy about needing one AND sent him the TSB after his was rebuilt. He opted not to as he had a "3 year unlimited mileage warranty" from a local shop. His Transmission failed with about 2k miles. But, he was 1,500 miles from the shop who originally did the work. He ended up paying another $800 for a repair in SD. The Tow companies quoted him between $600 - $2,100 to get it from SD to GA. He could have had it shipped for $600 but it would be a week. He now has a filter and 20k trouble free miles thus far. I think he ended up getting his money (or some of it) "so he says" from the local shop. Depends on what day you talk to him.

Thanks guys,
I am running the transmission through a stock 6.0 Super Duty Transmission filter and cooler system. So, you think its just some "breaking in" wear on the extra clutches? I was wondering if the extra clutches were not installed with the proper clearance which caused the premature wear. Anyway, if you guys feel it's normal break-in wear I will drop the pan again and do a complete fluid and filter change and check the condition of the magnet again. Thanks.
