I am new owner of a 6.0 L and have a question on how quickly it starts. I have driven a 7.3 L for the last year before buying my truck and it started right up but mine seems to take about a second or second and a half to start. I am not sure how to put it but it seems like it has to turn over three or four times before starting. I even talked with the service manager and he gave me some excuse about a small burst of fuel before a large one and that is what makes it take longer to start compared to the 7.3 L. Is this true?
I don't know about a small burst of fuel followed by a large one causing this but mine takes longer to start than the 7.3L I had and it sounds totally different when cranking and starting. All of them I have heard start this way. It definitely runs different than the 7.3L after it starts also. It takes longer to start than the 7.3 but will take you down the road a lot quicker than the 7.3.

Thanks for the answers. I think I might be looking for trouble since I have already had some issues. On the two burst of fuel the Service manager said that this is what makes the engine quieter than the 7.3 L.
The two bursts of fuel does have a lot to do with the quietness of the engine. The first burst is referred to as a pilot injection. It pre-cools the combustion chamber slightly and gets things right for the main injection, which benifits with a much better atomization and hence a more powerful burn. Why this makes it quieter is not clear to me but I have read several articles on the engine and they all said the same thing.
My '03 Ex 6.0 takes about a second to a second and a half of cranking to start. It's the same every time. My dealer tells me it's normal on the 6.0's. I barely have to turn the key on my 7.3 and it is running. But the 6.0 is GREAT!!

For once a dealer was mostly right. The reason it takes so long to get started is because of how the engine is timed. The timing is based off of the cam and crank position sensor, since these sensors cant be read until the engine is turning over, no fuel is delivered until the engine reads that crank trigger twice. At that point the engine begins shooting in the start fuel, and voila you have a running engine.

That could very well be true. The camshaft has a dowel pin that gets read by the cam position sensor only once per camshaft revolution or every second revolution of the crankshaft and the ECU won't turn on the IDM until it knows which injector to fire in the sequince.
Thank you! This is defenatly the place to come to get answers and I know Im not crazy on thinking it was taking longer. I have talked with several people at two dealerships where my truck was broke down at and no two people gave me a same answer and by then my trust had fadded. Finally I have someone that says something simular to the dealership and that is all I was looking for.
