What Size Wheels???

On a f100 4x4, 15 or 16"? My truck is RWD but it has dreams of becoming a 4x4. Wanted to keep the original wheels but the tire options for narrow 15" wheels seem pretty limited.

MCeee sorry I didn't answer your question on the "trucks at play" thread.
I'm running 255 r85 16 BGF's They are some of the tallest narrow tires I have found. Not as noisy as expected and worked surprisingly well in the sand when I aired them down to about 18 PSI.
I like to use the "TIRE RACK" web site to compare tire spec's.
Good luck in you quest!

No problem, it was kind of off topic. I have spent many hours on the tire rack website. Still curious if a F100 4x4 had 15 or 16" wheels. Your wheel tire combo looks perfect on your truck. Did the f250s have 16" wheels as stiock?

I've been through my references looking for what the base wheel/tire combo was versus the optional combos. All I find is that 15", 16", and 17.5" were optional on F-100s. F-250s could have 16", 17.5", or 19.5". You need to find somebody that has one of the Salesman's Handbooks or sales literature that can look up base versus optional equipment.

If I weaken and expand out of the 50/51/52 era trucks I'd love to have a 59/60 F-250 4x4. I already have the 19.5" wheels with a set of NOS 8-19.5" bias ply traction tires like pictured in the factory promotional photos. Stu

Nobody, and I mean that's nobody, has more wheel **** than me!!

The original question frustrates me because I think I should have the man's answer somewhere. I went through Wagner's book, the hard copy 57-63 Chassis Catalog, my '57 copy of of the Body Builder's Layout Book, and all the period wheel catalogs. Nothing spells out what was standard versus optional on the 4x4s. Maybe Bill (ND) will come by with an answer. Stu

Going by my "Four wheel drive operation and service booklet "Ford service forum #7"
Under specifications, it breaks it down by GVW
F100's with GVW of 4000#s had 6.70 x 15-4 tires
F100's with GVW of 4400#s had 6.70 x 15-6 tires
F100's with GVW of 5000#s had 6.50 x 16-6 tires
F100's with GVW of 5600#s had 7 x 17.5-6 tires
F250's with GVW of 5600#s had 7 x 17.5-6 tires
F250's with GVW of 6000#'s had 8 x 17.5-6 tires
F250's with GVW of 6600#s had 8 x 17.5-6 or 8 tires
F250's with GVW of 7400#s had 8 x 17.5's or 8 x 19.5's

My truck has a GVW of 7400 and came with 17.5's

Stu; just a thought, but that was from my four wheel drive booklet, so I'm not sure if it follows for 2 wheel trucks!

Wally - that's what I was looking for. I guess the original question could be read to apply to a 2wd, and I fast forwarded to the 4wd goal. Your chart shows that there were a lot more wheel/tire options than existed back in the early part of the decade. Things were more simple back then. Stu

The wheels that I have never seen are the five lug 17.5s. Five lug 15s and 16s both in and out nub come and go but the 17.5s i would love to see. As far as eight lug, we have about every style that was made, lock ring and tubeless, in and out nub, 16, 17.5 and 19.5. I think we need more trucks to put them on. And since Stu has a soft spot for the 4x4 fridge with 19.5s, I will post another pic of mine with the "winter tires". Just rounded out a set of the factory mirrors so that will get us one step closer to looking like the promo picture. And another 8 ft bed is probably in the near future. Maybe a flareside?

Mark I agree 5 lug 17.5's would have to be very rare! There was an * by the 5600 GVW F100, with the foot note "When equipped with 11-inch clutch and 9-leaf heavy-duty rear leaf springs" nothing about change of axle.

There was also a foot note for the 7400 GVW F250's that states "when equipped with 4-speed transmission, 6-leaf heavy-duty front springs, and 10-leaf rear springs." Which is puzzling because Teddy was 7400 GVW with a three speed. So is all this literature accurate?? Or was that part of the mysterious DSO#'s?

Am I right to assume you mean the 5 lug 17.5"? If so, the outer rim is 5.25" wide and designed to use an 8" wide tire. Either an 8-17.5" bias ply as would be original, or an 8R17.5" radial. The bias ply type is being reproduced and is available from Universal or Coker. About 32" outside diameter. An 8" tire is the widest approved for a 5.25" rim. Stu

This 5 lug 17.5" x 5.25" wheel is pretty unusual. Made by K-H, part number 40337. Ford part number B6C 1015A. National Wheel and Rim Association (NWRA) cross reference code is X-45059, which isn't really of much help to anybody because no other manufacturer used them. Listed as an option between 1957 and 1966. Stu
