I have a 1998 F-150 4x4 with a 4.6 Triton with 127,000 miles. The truck seems to run great driving in town or crusing, but when it comes to steep grades or a high speed passing situation it doesn't seem to want to go and I get valve pinging. Any ideas?
Sounds like it has some carbon built up in the cylinders causing it to ping under a load and this will cause the computer to retard the timing. The injectors could be dirty also, not supplying enough fuel. I would have the top end of the motor professionally cleaned to remove the carbon build-up. Also, check your fuel pressure to make sure that it is up to snuff. Along with the fuel filter.
Another thing that I have learned is to take it out of overdrive on steep grades to reduce the load on the engine.
Besides the good advice that lxman gave you should also probably try cleaning the MAF. If you do a search here you'll find info on how to do that. It's easy
I just bought this truck about two months ago. I had been using 87 octane gas. Just to see if it would help I put 93 octane in it. Its like a different truck. The idle is smoother, the throttle is more responsive, and climbs steep grades without losing speed.
Why does the 93 octane make that much difference. Could the computer have been programed for the premium fuel?
