Can I calibrate the fuel gauge?

I ran out of gas today, luckily I have a second tank, so i made it home, It sucked some crud in to the carb and would only run with the choke on.

Anyhow I took the sending unit out and checked the adjustment. the bottom line is the gauge won't read less than 1/4 tank with the key on. Key off it goes all the way down to empty. Can I add a "pull down resistor"

The good news is the tank looks to be in excellent condition, like new actually. Which is amazing considering it sat for 15 years.

Have you given thought to bending the arm?

I tried bending the metal tab the arm sits on when it's empty but that had no effect. I think the gauge is at fault. When I ground the wire the gauge goes way past the full mark.

Yes, you can add a resistor to bring it down. I would recommend an adjustable so you can control where you want it set. Something like this would work:

25-Ohm 3-Watt Rheostat - RadioShack.com

3 watts is overkill, but it will do the job & its cheap!

thank you my friend!

In series to the gage or across the sending unit resistor?

Got the pot and tried it out, works now I just have to run out of gas again to calibrate the gauge.
