Checked out a bad credit lot for vehicles this weekend. They have a 1988 F150 with no muffler-tailpipe, bald front tires, nasty pealing paint, cracked windshield and sundry wires and cables hanging down. Lived on a dirt road, absolutely filthy, bench seat, am-fm no cass. AOD, 4x4. And they want $3495.00 for something that books retail at $2200.00. Plus they would tack on $950.00 finance charge, plus $1150.00 down. For a total of around $4400.00. Now that's ballsy in my book, I think I'm in the wrong business.
Yeah not surprising. There is a lot of shady people/lots around here selling whatever truck they pulled out of a farm plot. My truck needs some work but I'm comfortable with my purchase. List price on my truck was something like 2000-2500 more than what I paid for it so given the work, that's OK.
That truck you mention sounds like the 88 Ranger I looked at. Just a standard reg cab, long box 2.3cyl 2wd thing. It was listed as a "tight little truck". It was listed as having PS yet when you drove it, it was harder to drive than a manual steering truck. Found out the pump was actually missing from the engine and the truck still had a power steering rack! :O Heh, he said you'll get used to it, trust me! The truck also had a $200 paint bomb spray done on it in flat black and his advertised NEW BRAKES! was just new front pads. When I got there he said it wasn't the original odo, which may have been the case but the one in there had 356,000kms on the clock, the truck certainly didn't have the 100,000 or so he claimed, LOL!
I handed the keys back said that's alright, thanks for your time and walked away, he actually looked PO/annoyed that I wasn't falling for his sales schtick. He was asking $2200cdn for it, it wasn't even worth $800.
I won't consider looking at anything older than a 94' for less than 1k bucks, being a FORD. The body, chassis, drivetrain doesn't matter up here. The people are too lazy to wash and properly care for their vehicles, and complain when they have problems or only get 500.00 for a trade in. WHAAAA!
