I just bought my daughter a 1996 Ranger 4x2 shortbed with the 4 cylinder, automatic, and a/c. I have two questions. First, the a/c blows ice cold and works on all settings but when I accelerate, it seems to switch over to defrost. Now I know that on some vehicles the compressor will kick off to keep from draining power on acceleration. Is that what this is? It seems to stay off too long after I take my foot out of it. Second, the water temperature guage does not work. Where is the sending unit and how would you trouble shoot that?
Actually, even though there is a switch that shuts the compressor off at WOT, it sounds more like you're low on vacuum. The doors that control the direction (which vents) and temperature on your truck are all controlled by vacuum. Low vacuum will make the door operate eratically, or not at all. Since vacuum goes down (less) as engine speed go up, that sounds like the problem. Vacuum leaks are a tad hard to find, but are usually easy to fix. Best of luck to you.
Along with checking for a vac leak, check the intergrity of the vac reservoir. They are usually a small plastic tank; I've seen lines get disconnected and tanks develop leaks (seam failure).
