Well, how bout it? Has anyone done it before? I will be getting a new motor (big block or a 351C) and i want dual exhaust with the option of going open header(you know hit a switch an electric motor moves a door and presto, open header). i was thinking about this cause it seems like the easiest and cheapest way of doin it. So whatt do you think can it be done?
I dont see any problem with side pipes(have had them on trucks and cars) what are you going to use? the full length type like on a cobra, or just exhaust that exits in front of the rear wheel?
as for uncapping the headers I think this is good if your going to run it at the track, but may atract unwanted attention from the local authorities if used on the street.
if I missed anything put a little more info on there so I get a better idea of what you have in mind.
And yeah I've seen the switch operated units, it's easier than crawling under to unscrew them, I believe summit sells the capped sections of pipe you can install in line after the headers if you have the means and fabrication skills you could alter these and make the switch operated ones your self.
Hey I got an update for you on running your exuast unncorked, in my jegs mag the have the standard section of pipe with the cutout ranging in size 2.37 to 3.5 wing nuts and gaskets included they run $26.99 to $31.99, then the have a cast iron version that is cable operated so you can open them from inside the vehicle these run $49.99 and the only size listed is 2 inch outside diameter.
lastly they have the flowtech warlock muffler wich you can run your complete exhuast and then open these up at the track, they all run $69.99.
hope this info is a help and you can pick up a free jegs on line.
I did a set of side pipes on an old model Bronco with a Boss 302.. we made em outta 3 inch exhaust pipe. Layed out where we wanted the bends.. cut the tips so they would be swept back.. cheap deal.. looked way cool. Had em painted with high temp paint.
I believe that i will get full lenght pipes. I remember seeing on TRUCKS (you know on TNN) a thing like the electric motor pulling open a door and then running open headers. If only i could remember what it was called.
