Do we really need Xover steering?
heres the post.. cut and pasted:::
Some good Reading on Xover steering:: the truth be told why i dont run it....yet at least
i have heard of about 7 cases of the sector shaft breaking... all were 39.5 inch and up x 16" wide and up tires... none had Xover steering and all were greater than 12" of lift.. some much greater.. anyway ive just heard of these cases from shop talk at my local 4x4 shop(oh ya it did happen to me once, read on).. anyway three cases were backing up slowly and two were at a dead stop turning the wheel(no, no) and two were slow manuevering going forward.... the point here is this thing breaks under slow speed lots a turning.. which we all try to avoid anyway...... if this things gonna break the odds are its when your backing out of your driveway, not when your barreling down the freeway.. I hope... anyway it did happen to me once! my first lifted rig..1991 Ford Ranger 4.0L engine 8" lift 33" thornbirds(worlds worse tire) turning out of an intersection.. fairly slow steering wheel became a freewheel.. rolled straight ahead off the shoulder and waited 4 hours for the tow truck.... so im familiar with the need... i do check the shaft visually before every road trip.. PLEASE UNDERSTAND -- i in NO way think that my ranger and my F250 are set up the same... the sector shaft in that truck was way smaller turning 33" swampers... now my Shaft(no pun!) is three times the size and the tires are not much bigger... so im not too worried for now.... and im hoping someone will come out with a beefier steering box including Hella thick shaft or something along those lines as i dont thing Xover steering is a 100% fix.. even if you get the angle the exact same as stock(not possible with any greater than 8" of lift cause thats how far Xover steering hub relocates the joint)... stock wasent turing 14.5,16,18" wide tires........ with all the big Fords running around these days.. its only a matter of time till someone comes out with a monstor steering box.... thats when ill throw down the cash..
