Rediculously rich!!
However....like the title says, I cant seem to lean the old girl out.
Heres what I've done...
Vac leaks, none. I can get my vac gauge to read 22 and run well but it seems to like 20 best. Tons of vac on decal.
NO FEED BACK! All that junk has been removed, DUI dizzy, carb is an ebay knock off of the motorcraft single barrel non-feedback. No numbers I can see, but has RALLY ink stamped on front of fuel bowl. Mechanical and vac advance both working properly. Choke set properly and working as it should.
Stock intake, exhaust manifolds, egr deleted.
I can get it to idle fine and drive well, pulls strong, no pinging, missing, but it wants almost 4 turns on the idle mix screw and 8 degrees advanced. It smells rich, exhaust smells bad, I had to make it run like crap just to pass emissions and that was just barely passing.
Anything less then that and it idles rough, misses and sputters. I've been all over the timing marks, and everywhere with the idle screw. it only runs well extreamly rich.
Any ideas??? new needle in carb?? I've had it apart, its clean, tight, gaskets good. Float good though ive got conflicting info on how it should be adjusted.
I believe ive tried everything but still guzzling gas!
Sorry so long but I wanted to include everything.
Thanks in advance!
It does, indeed, sound like it is rich. Have you tried disconnecting a vacuum port cover to introduce a vacuum leak? This would lean it out and if it seemed to run better, would verify that it is rich.
I remember seeing Rally carburetors being sold on ebay. I believe it was a company based in Miami, FL. From what I remember, the carburetors were advertised as being new and were reasonably priced. My gut tells me these are manufactured overseas and quality control may [or may not] be an issue. If you have your old carburetor, you could compare the size of the main jet.
Is this the carburetor you purchased? http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-FORD-CARBURETOR-YF-TYPE-CARTER-250-300-ENGINES-6-CIL-1975-1982-VACUUM-/140919069950?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item20cf6e5cfe&vxp=mtr#ht_4248wt_1105
Have you replaced the fuel pump? Sometimes pumps put out too much pressure and cause running problems.

Yes that's the carb I have.
I haven't looked into the fuel pump, its mechanical by the way.
If I create a vac leak, the idle gets rough, sputters, acts like it does when I crank the mixture screw in to far.
Everything is tight. Could probably use new manifold gasket.
I've sprayed a whole can of carb cleaner in every place that could possibly have a leak, crack, or be loose or worn and never had ANY change in idle.
I have an air fuel gauge but my O2 sensor won't budge. I've had the truck for just over a year, its always been a touch rich, I've finally decided to try and correct the problem, if I can find it that is.
I can get it to run well, idle decent, little flat in third, but over all it drives good, just rich. If I apply vac to the air pump, I can get rid of the exhaust smell, but cant leave the pump pumping air to the cat all the time.
Thanks for the input!
