Info Please

Hi new guy here, but not to ford pickups, my last being an 84 F150 302 auto. I have found a 1979 Ford Stepside with a 352 in it. I know that this is not the stock motor. Can anyone tell me anything about it. Its backed by a 3 speed trans. This will be my daily driver and I only drive 2 miles to work and around town. Any long distance will be done in my Ranger. Thanks

Welcome to the site.

I had a 352 in my 1968 Pickup and it ran great. I also had the 3-speed trans and the only problem ever was it sometimes popped out of 1st gear when taking off.

P.S. I have seen the 352 referred to as a "boat anchor". Maybe people more knowledgeable than I (about everyone here) will chime in.

my 65 was a 352 3spd when I bought it, used it for a couple of years that way and never had a complaint. When I swapped it to 4wd I also swapped to a 390 I had on the shelf, the only reason I did the engine swap was a few people on here told me the 390 for some reason would give me better mileage.

If anything it is slightly better mileage wise, not sure because of the other changes, I went from 2wd with 3:25 gears @ 13 mpg to 4wd with 3:50 gears and retained the 13mpg. So I'm guessing if I swapped back to 3:25 gears it would be an inprovement, but not worth the swap.

PS; forgot to mention it's been my daily driver since the beginning and no issues.

352 was the casting number on the front of most FE blocks, it may be a 390, or actually (lets see if I can get this right) FE and FT engines went from 330 331 332 352 359 360 361 389 390 391 401 406 410 427 428 477 534.
Ok that's all I got, dunno if there is any I missed or put in wrong, the FT engines had alot of differences, but I think they were considered to be in the same family.
