4.6L Gutless?

Okay I have a 2001 F150 with the 4.6L, I think its the 260 hp version. While this truck hasn't recieved a tune up in a while (not my fault, it's my mother's and she hasn't wanted to put the $100 into it) but feels gutless. As a comparison, my 390 running on mismatched spark plugs, 7 plug wires, a bad fuel pump, and -8 degrees timing, still outperforms this thing. Is this normal for you guys that own older V8's? Or is it a tuneup problem?

Unless something major is wrong, any motor I have owned has kept it's power no matter how old it was.

I had a 4.6 in a 1997 F150 4wd and I was not impressed. I just don't think it's torquey enough to move around such a big heavy truck. They may have gotten much better over the years though.

Two things, they are gutless in comparison to any FE series engine (330, 360, 390, 428), and it probably needs a tune up whichs compounds the gutless issues that this engine has.

Okay, I wasn't sure if it was the engine itself or just what I was used to. It's not worth the extra 2 city MPG over my 390 for the truck then.

Kilgore,

being stuck in japan I bought what was available used in the area which led me to the 2001 5.4l SCREW i currently own, but I would literally kill gore and maim (pun intended) for a mid 70's crew cab with a manual tranny and a FE engine. the FE engine is so simple, and bulletproof that WGAF about the gas mileage? the fact that you can fix damn near every thing on the truck with a craftsman 300 piece tool kit is more than enough reason to keep it. especially if you can find a 4wd version in manual.

FYI as a kid growing up i rural Indiana I blew a spark plugs porcelin out while out in the boonies hunting. I changed the plug with a plug from god knows what that was rolling around in my tool box and made it home. Guarantee you can't do that with any of the modular motors or even the new coyote motor.

Well the only reason fuel mileage comes into play is because I'm moving to college soon and it'd be a bit easier to keep the thing full of fuel. But if the engine was really gutless, even in good tune, I cant see that two mpg would really make that much of a difference. I will say that this truck has been a joy to learn on and runs like a raped ape.

I wasn't for sure if I was reading your location correctly or not. I hope you're showing those ricers what American power does. Bringin the truck back to the states? Or not comin back?

I currently work and live in Japan, but once I retire i will probably move back to rural Indiana for my retirement. I own a house here, but I also own property in the Indiana, so the thought was to rent this place when i leave and use its income to supplement retirement funds. With the cost of living in indiana being as low as it is i could easily live off of just the rental of my house here in japan. or I oculd sell it and invest into something, though i prefer real estate as a long term investment over the stockmarket. But who knows the world changes more every day.

My truck is not supercharged, but a SCT tuner and the 4.1 gear swap i just did is deffinitely getting their attention, especially when the BF goodriches start to sing on the highway

For some reason my brain associated screw with a supercharger (like a roots) instead of super crew. Dont ask why, I'm not sure.
