Have a 2011 F150 Ecoboost with the regular old 4x4 with the switch on the dash. Bought it used with 43k on it and it runs great. Last night was coming home in a snowstorm and the roads were nasty. You know the type - snow covered with 2 slushey black strips in the lane. Perfect time to try 4WD as the conditions were ripe for it...
Popped it into 4Hi and after the clunks associated with it (I was moving) I noticed this screeching/scraping noise that seemed to vary with the engine RPM and/or load on the driveline. It's not very loud and easily drowned out by the radio but I fear it's not good. As soon as you pop it into 2WD it stops and is quiet as a church mouse.
My first thought is that something needs some lube but looking at diagrams it seems like everything is spinning all the time and it would make noise all the time. Last vehicle I had with "real" 4WD was a 2000 Explorer and I remember it sounded somewhat normal in 4WD. But that was 11 years ago and my memory isn't what it used to be.
Doesnt sound like a natural noise to me. Never hurts to have it given a once over if you have concern. I looked around and found on a raptor forum that mentioned F150s in the text it might have to deal with the vaccum lines for the 4x4 system. That "Might" be a culprit to look at considering you only hear it when engaging 4WD.
I have a 2013, FX4, EcoBoost and it is positively as quiet as a church mouse (so to speak) when engaging and fully in 4WD. Something doesn't sound normal here.
Thanks. I figured it wasn't normal but it was one of those things that is barely noticeable so I thought maybe it was normal.
Probably get it in this week - we're supposed to get snow Wed - Thurs so I'll see if I can get it in Friday so there is enough snow for them to hear it.
Also need to have them check the trans programming. Now that it's in the 20s on the first few shifts of the AM it will shift really rough. After the first few shifts it's perfect all day no matter what. Had a similar issue on my Taurus and an updated programming brought it in line.
