i drove my 1990 f150, straight 6, up town yesterday, about 20 miles in 115 degree wheather. when i stoped the engine died. acted like it was out of gas. switched tanks and noticed the front gas gauge was pegged past full. wasnt like that before. was full but not pegged. i did just two days before top of my rear tank. started right up, but wheni switch back to the rear it died again. so i drove it back on the front tank. half way back i switched to the rear again and it drove fine. im thinking that b topping the rear off that something happened, pressurised the system some how. anyway it seems fine now. i ran the front tank down to where it just reads full. could the rear have bleed into the front and caused this problem. could it be a check valve of some kind going bad, thanks in advance for an help.
Sound like the classic Ford dual tank pump safety recall. And that your rear in tank pump is starting to go out. Thank Ford for dual tanks right. If you had the single tank it might have left you stranded. As for the front tank topping itself off, that safety recall I mentioned fixes this. Its a bad check valve in the pump itself, it lets fuel flow past it when its not supposed to. Ford will replace the pumps as stated in the recall.
thanks J.R. ive noticed, while surfing the posts, problems like this. i just bought the truck two weeks ago for the original owner. do i just contact ford or do i need to find a copy of the recall notice somewhere and stick it in there face to make them fix the problem.
Do both. Print out a copy of the recall and have it with you when you go to Ford. If they give you this face , then show them the recall. They should fix it free of charge. And don't let them say its too late for them to fix it.
On the right hand side of this web page up at the to you will see a list of items to click on. It starts as FTE Home, Forums, etc, etc. Look down that list and you'll see one called Recalls/TSB's , click on that. Follow the links and you will find it.
well i contacted ford and they told me it was to late, i missed it by about 1 year, that is when the recall for my year expired. they told me the former owner was notified , about two years ago.
That sounds like a load of crap. They are required to fix all vehicles that fall under a safety recall. And this was a semi-major one too. Because of this if you don't catch it in time you can overflow one of your tanks and spill out on the ground. And the last I checked gasoline is highly flammable. Talk to the the manager at the Ford dealership, or just try another dealership.
I don't think it's officially classified as a "safety" recall, but maybe if you pull into their service drive with gas dripping onto the ground, they'll see it your way.
i dont know, im better off replacing them my self. i found a guy on ebay that will sell me both pumps for $80.00 each. i looked the ac delco # up and they list for about $145.00 each. part #43-103 and 43-104. i also found another site that sells them cheap. im worried that this must be a striped down version of the pump. anyone tried one of the ac delco pumps.
well ill make some more phone calls and do some more bitchen. but in the meantime i ran a pressure test on both tanks and they both check out. whats strange to me is that when im on the front tank, the motor starts right up, when cold, but when im on the back tank, i have to crank it a few times. according to what ive read the front pump is the has the bad valve in it. i checked both fuel pumps with key on, and running, and checked to see if they bleed down after the engine was turned off. everythng checked out. guess in the mean time i can start on the front and switch to the rear and run it down. to bad the check valves couldnt just be replaced.
They recall is for 1990-1993 F-series trucks. The warranty (safety recall) is for 12 years or 150,000 miles whichever comes 1st. I just took mine down this morning to make an appointment to have it done. '93 with 97,000 miles on it. Took a print out of the NHTSA "SAFETY Recall".
And FORD's paperwork cooincides with what the NHTSA paperwork says.
If yer truck is within the age/mileage parameters your ok. But if over you gotta do it yerself or pay to have it done.
