possible F-150 timing problem

I have a 1990 F-150 with a 302. Motor was rebuilt about 30k miles ago, I recently put on reconditioned heads and a new stock cam. My timing is very irregular in acceleration and sometimes at idle. I have a great loss of power at 10 degrees BDC and advancing increases power. I've invested an enormous amount of money into process of elimination and still can't find the problem. My next attempt was going to be to change the sensors in the distributor but I'm up for any sugestions and would appreciate the help. Just so you know I have a new computer and TFI unit in the truck. Thanks

I just wanted to make sure you knew about the plug you must pull when you check your timing. The only time I have seen the timing bounce all over is if the plug has not been removed from the little wire harness that sticks off the TFI module on the side of the distributor. Remove plug, set timing, put the plug back in. If that is not the problem, maybe the distributor shaft or bushings that retain it are worn and the shaft is moving around to much?

With the rec. from tripndrag, when you had the cam changed, was the cam PLUG installed on the end of the shaft? The PLUG keeps the shaft from walking for and aft. If all other recs. don't help, check this out. Good luck....

If you reused the old dis., check that shaft and gear for slop.

I did pull the spout plug( I think thats what its called) when I adjusted the timing. When that plug is removed the timing is as steady as can be but as soon as its back in its all over the place.
I don't know if the cam plug was in or not. Ididn't know anything about it. I did check for play when I installed the new cam and there was maybe a sixteenth of an inch. I didn't know what the tolerances were but it didn't seem too much to me.
I'm going to pull the timing cover and chack the chain as well as seeing if I can posibly rebuild my distributor so I will check for movement in my cam then.
Thank y'all very much for responding, I was ready to give up.

End play on the cam should be between .001" and .007" with a service limit of .009". If end play is beyond the service limit, a new thrust plate must be installed. The thrust plate is the bolted retaining plate for the cam right behind the cam gear. Hope this helps.
