Timing Chain

I have a 94 F150 with a 125K and was wondering how hard or is it worth it to change all the stuff required for the timing system. Now the reason I am asking this is mainly I was stranded on the side of the road with my father in his 86 VW Jetta when the chain went and it was down for weeks because it was a zero clearence motor. If I can get farther head to fix it before it breaks and has that problem. I just bought it and got to do a lot of work before I think it will be ready for the road. What do you think and why.

I also want to know if there are any threads about taking the doors apart. I need to check what size speaker I have so I can do an aftermarket swap.

And what do you guys have to jack up encase of a flat tire. And I know Hi-Lift isn't that good if you have unless you have an aftermarket bumpers.

I was thinking something like this?

Powerbuilt® 3 Ton Jack & Jack Stand - Tractor Supply Co.

I wouldn't worry about it. The odds of a timing set failing on one of these is pretty low.

You might want to do one problem per post fyi....

that being said, first things first, you should go get a chilton, the TC and door questions are pretty well explained in there. You could also go to crutchfield and use the "what fits my vehicle" link for the speakers size, but IIRC they are a 6" round.

I actually don't have a jack, but I always have good tires. If i'm going to be out of town I'll throw the spare, a floor jack, and a bag of tools in the back (in case of breakdown)

And when they do fail, they typically just jump a tooth...

These trucks have double roller timing chains and they're not a typical maintenance item like a OHC type motor with a belt. I wouldn't do it unless you had other reasons for getting in there..

For a jack, I use the factory one located on the passenger side under the hood. I also carry a 4' HiLift, but thats more for offroad. A small hydraulic bottle jack is convenient, 3 ton works fine (I carry one of those too) but sometimes its too tall to fit under the axle with a flat (thus the OEM jack as a backup). I use a X type lug wrench as well.

X 2 ^

I also carry a 36 inch 1/2 drive breaker bar to loosen the lug nuts in the event of a flat. I tighten them with the X type lug wrench and check with a torque wrench when I get back to civilization.

Timing chain is good unless it jumps or you hear it rattling. If you're already in there doing a water pump or whatever the parts are not expensive and you should change them then.

Door speakers are I believe 6.5" round. You can put 6x9's in there if you get out the Sawzall and measure carefully. Rear speakers are 6 x 8.5.

I use the factory jack for flats, but also carry some short (~12") pieces of 2x4 to use under it if needed. Also have a plate about 12" x 16" to use as a jack plate if I'm on soft ground.

I see your lug wrenches and raise you an impact gun
Got tire plugs, air chucks, and an impact gun to deal with square wheels.
Of course I have the air system to run it too.
