stake pockets

Got a question here that I hope someone might be able to help me out on. With the box I have for my 52' F-3, much of the lower sheetmetal is badly rusted. I know how to repair the flat sheetmetal, but don't quite know how to go about repairing the stake pockets.

All 4 are rusted out on the lower 6 to 8 inches, and 2 of them I think I can patch the holes that are there, however 2 of them are completely missing the lower 6 inches. Now for my question.

Does anyone know if the stake pockets for the F-1 6.5ft box are similar to the F-2/3 8ft express box? I know that the F-2/3 box is taller, but is that the only differance? I know that replacement stake pockets are available for the F-1 box, and if the only differance is the length, I could make the replacement work.

Anyone have any insight on this? Thanks in advance

Jon

Jon; I just replaced the stake pockets on my 54 F100 I do not know if yours are the same but I got mine from Dennis Carpenter in NC. they were cheep and if they are a little long I am sure you could cut to fit. Getting old ones off is easy enough with a grinder. Jim VA.

Hi Jon,
I replaced the lower section on my 55 about six months ago I just brought one and cut it in half and welded it in. I also used the corners of the extra pieces to make it line up straight, grind it down then weld again, grind until it was smooth.

Jon, if I read your post right, you want to know if the stake pockets the fellas bought for their F-100s and F-1s will work on your F-3 bed. Or, in other words, are the F-3 bed pockets the same dimensions as the F-100 and F-1 (except for the length). Is that correct?

I don't have an answer but if you post the dimensions of your stake pockets (width and depth) then somebody with an F-100 or F-1 could measure theirs and let you know if the F-100 or F-1 parts will work to repair your F-3 stake pockets.

If I remember correctly the F-3's pockets are slightly wider and longer than the F-1's. You would have to get 48-50 F-1 pockets since the 51 and up have square pockets. Bobj49f2 is the expert on these trucks maybe you could give him an email. Since you have good fabrication skills maybe you could make some nice square ones? Might not match the middle short one but you could make that one also.

Yeah, I did know that the F-2/3 boxes are patterned after the 48-50 F-1's, and I had the sneaking suspicion that they weren't the same size stakes. I really would prefer to stick with the rounded ends on them, so I might just take the time to build a form and hammer myself out a set of patches. Shouldn't be too bad, just time consuming. Just figured I'd check and see if there was an off the shelf patch that would make it easier.

Oh well, its what I get for playing with the big trucks
